HELP! High RPM, No power

I will be thoroughly impressed with the person who can miraculosly help me with this problem. I have a 96 Tl (2.5) which has been having problems with high rpms, but very little power output. (automatic transmission). When I step on the throttle (softly or abruptly) the RPMs shoot up as theyre supposed to, but the car moves at a snail's pace, takes much longer to reach speed, I mean DEAD slow. There are no performance parts whatsoever involved, stock engine. To diagnose this, so far ive;

changed spark plugs
changed air filter
hollowed out back catalytic converter (closest to muffler)
changed engine oil.

The engine revs and sounds normal, and you can tell it wants to take off, but its almost as if its bogging in mud, or pulling a boat (just trying to give you a better picture)

I had a mechanic friend tell me, it might be the fuel filter or TPS. Could this be the issuse?

Whats going on???

I dont think the '96 2.5TL have TPS option. You might want to check and see if your brakes are stuck. Worst case senario it could be transmission related.

TPS is Throttle Position Sensor, not TCS, Traction Control System.

I'd say check the torque converter.

You are right, I was thinking of traction when I saw the "T".

To me it sounds like transmission slippage. What does the fluid look like?

@ 9632tl, The transmission fluid could use a change. Do you think a flush might do the job? or could this be a more mechanical issue?

I would change it, along with the filter.

Don't flush it! Just do a drain and fill until the fluid coming out is nice and red. Use ATF-Z1 only, too.

@ Go90go, I did hear that a flush could be detrimental (negatively) cause it could loosen up and sludge build up and burn the actual transmission. I appreciate your guys feedback!
