harmonic balancer bolt
harmonic balancer bolt
HELP!! We have a 1996 tl and we have a blown head gasket and can not get the bolt off. We have heated it and it will not break lose. We used a tork wrench and it will not break free at all. We dont want to scrap it the car is in awesome shape. It's only got 150,000 miles on it. Any ideas? Anybody?
W/ an air impact you need a good one, rated for 500+ ft-lbs reverse torque and you need to heat the bolt head w/ acetylene torch to loosen slightly.
W/ a restraint tool and breaker bar, you will likely need a cheater pipe to gain enough leverage to break the bolt loose. Breakout torque w/o heating the bolt will exceed 500 ft-lbs. W/ an 1.5 ft leverage of most breaker bars, this is beyond capability of most of us.
good luck

You need to use this tool
and a 1/2 inch ratchet braced against the frame rail to hold the pulley and use a breaker bar with a 30 inch cheater pipe to break the bolt loose. In addition, I had my son put as much torque as he could on the cheater pipe while I hit the cheater pipe with a sledge hammer where it overlaps the breaker bar. Without this impact, it would not break loose.
