Engine starts then stops...HELP!!

Hey guys, I'm driving a '96 2.5 TL Premium Edition and a problem just occurred today. When I turn the key to the 1st position (I) it allows me to control the radio which is good. When I turn the key to the 2nd Position (II) none of the lights on the dashboard come on (i.e.; battery light, oil light, SRS light, Seatbelt light, HandBRAKE light, Car door indicator, the P light that shows the car is in Park, nor does it make the 6 Beeps if your seatbelt is off.) When I turn the key to the 3rd Position (III) and hold it, the engine starts and when I let go of the key it stops. After I let go of the key it goes back to position II which is normal. The part that I'm having trouble with is when I let go of the key the engine cuts off instantly. The engine IS starting but only when I hold the key to Position III. Any info regarding this will be most appreciated. Thanks!!

I think I will but I'd have to get it towed.

One more thing i forgot to mention is that when the car started 2 of the 20 tries the lights on the dash were flickering which made me think of something with the battery but everything else connected to it works, (radio, lights, etc)

From your description, this is almost certainly a faulty keyswitch. I believe there may be a recall on the keyswitch. You might get a free repair from Honda, so check w/ them. Even if you have to pay someone it's not a bad job. Part is probably $50 or so.

good luck

thank you so much man...this morning i just went to try my car again and messed around with it. If my key is in position II and if i gently and very slowly move it to position III the dash lights come on, and if i move it into position III all the way and ease up on the key making sure it stays just above the position II the car keeps running...So I agree, it could be the keyswitch. Is it called the keyswitch or ignition? But thanks a whole lot!!

Have you tried giving it gas at all while it does run? If it continues to run while you're on the gas pedal it's most likely your fuel filter of fuel pump...if the fuel filter is clogged it'll not stay running unless you have your foot on the pedal pumping gas in there.

Hey everybody, this is me letting you know I fixed the problem. All I had to do was replace the Ignition Switch...took about 25-30 minutes and works perfectly...the part only costed $66...thanks for all of you suggestions...mostly appreciated!!

Is this what you fixed? Where is the ignition switch located? I'm having the exact same issue right now and need to get the car towed from a restaurant parking lot.
