Drivers Side Mirror

Anyone ever buy replacement glass for their mirrors. My drivers side mirror 98 3.2 TL got vandalized and the dealership wants $300 to replace the whole assembly. I'd like to replace the glass and can't find anyone local to do it.

It depends on how the mirror is attached to the actuation system. This is generally not a serviceable item, so you'll be on your own to come up w/ a fix.

It might be cheaper in the long run to look at car-part.com for a used part near you. Also I found power mirrors on ebay twice for the Suburban I used to have. Am I glad I'm not feeding that beast these days!

good luck

i agree with texashonda... since a mirror is light, it won't cost much to switch... look online and even call around to junk yards.. they can pull them and send them to you for a little fee...

if you have heated mirrors, it may not work correctly if you just replace the mirror itself...

replacement mirror(the piece of mirror attached on the acuator) is available but it could be very tricky to install. I had it installed by my freind. Check the dealers's part web site and you can browse through this part by looking at the part diagram.

Got it

I was able to purchase the entire mirror assembly at a junkyard that car-part.com found. It took me about 15 minutes to figure out how to replace just the glass so that I didn't have to get the replacement assembly painted to match my car.

It is a heated mirror so it had two simple electrical connectors to plug together. With a little bith a pressure it popped off the center swivel and two adjustment actuators pretty easily. It took 15 minutes because I was being very cautious and didn't want to waste $120 for a piece of glass.

Help...

Needle
My passenger rear view mirror is kinda loose. I can use the controls from inside the car to pull it towards the car (and up or down) but it won't go in the opposite direction (away from the car). When I clean it - it's all loose and wobbly - not set in like the drivers side.

I am wondering if it's just loose and I can pop it back into place. Since you've looked at this area intricately - any suggestions. Can I look at something to make out if somethings broken (actuator possibly !!) or it's just popped out?

It's a 3.2 premium - so it's a heated mirror too !!

Hey Needle, that's the problem I was having with my mirror. The only thing it is my passenger side mirror. I can't get it off, now I have to get a new mirror because I cracked the old one. How did you get it off?

Is that a pic of the inside of the side-view assembly?

I need to replace a cracked side-view on a 2001 3.2 TL. Does anyone know if I will need a unique tool to pop the cracked one off and install the replacement? and Over what years are the mirrors identical? For example, I found a 2003 sideview mirror on ebay for $30. Any and all advice would be appreciated.

Mirror Removal

As I said it took me a little while to remove the glass from the junkyard mirror and install it on my car because I was extra precautious.

There is a metal clip (or washers) that on each of the two actuators as well as the center swivel. I removed these by reaching behind the glass with a long screwdriver. I then pried it off at the center swivel with the screwdriver and with my other hand behind the glass applying more pressure in an attempt to spread out the force and not crack the glass.

To install the new glass I simply pressed it onto the center swivel first, applying a fair amount of pressure directly behind the connection point. Next, I pressed it onto the actuators one at a time, each time applying the force directly behind the connection point to avoid breaking the glass.

The only tough part was connecting the wires for the heated mirror. I had to loosen one screw behind the glass to allow more room for my hands. I have small hands so it was easier but it took me a little bit of time because there wasn't much slack in the wires.

It worked fine for me and I hope it works fine for you.

I was able to finally change my passenger side mirror. There is a service hole on the bottom of the housing. Once this is unscrewed the mirror comes off.

2TLS: The "housing" is the assembly that attaches to the car and holds the mechanisms that control the mirror as well as the mirror itself, OR the housing is the plastic case in which the glass fits, the plastic case then being fitted to the mechanisms controling its movement?
Does this serviceable hole also come on 2000 TL?

After realizing the replacement glass I ordered did not include the heated back, I succumbed to the dealership. The dealership wants to charge me $50 to replace the mirror, but I think I can do it myself. Unlike Needle, 2TLS, and Arshdeep, I only need to replace the glass itself, not the frame that connects to the housing, nor the entire assembly. I'm only worried that when the part arrives, I will have difficulty connecting the heated back to the electric supply. I know I can seperate the cracked mirror from the frame with a screwdriver, but will I have to remove the entire frame from the "actuator assembly" if the heating element is to work again?
OR, more simply, does the heated back of the glass connect directly to the electric supply? Will I have to use glue ?
