door handles interchangeable?

lately ive been thinking if the rear exterior door is interchangeable with the corresponding front and still functions properly. i was thinking of this mainly to shave the keyhole.

now, tonight, my handle broke but it still functions. basically, it sticks out a little. i know im not the only one with this problem.

any help would be appreciated from the gurus. TIA!

Good luck on fixing them, the only solution I found was to order new ones. I have 4 of them with your same problem. If you find a solution let us know. ghia01

thanks for replying. where did you get yours? was it off of ebay/craigslist or from a oem online site/dealership? how much did it cost you for one? ive been watching ebay but sadly nothing in my color/year has come up yet. ill def. let you know if it works or not.

thanks again

btw, ive not yet taken a look inside of the door but how do you go about removing the exterior handle?

Both of my rear door handles broke like how you described. i took the interior door panel off and used a stretchy spring to wrap around the backside of the door handle and wrapped the other end to the inside of the door. you'll figure it out once you take the panel off and peel back the plastic. basically all you need is a little tension to pull the door handle back in so that it sits flush with the door. i couldn't figure out how to remove the door handle without removing everything else in the door so i went the band-aid fix.

i fixed mine last weekend.. pulling it out was difficult. there is a rod that goes through plastic bushing that I had to pry out with a screwdriver. i was afraid it was going to break, but it held up.

anyway. one end of the spring is a U with one end of the U going to the spring.
well I drilled a hole in a place where the plastic tab was that held the U and stuck the other end of the U in there.
so far its holding up fine..
