To realign the distributor you will need to know the following.
1. TDC.
2. #1 spark plug on the distributor cap.
3. Engine firing order.
4. Direction of distributor rotation.
The idea is to drop the distributor inbetween the #1 cylinder and the last firing cylinder (How many cylinders?) but, within the distributor's adjusting range of the #1 cylinder.
Lets begin.
0. Disconnect the ignition coil.
1. Find the #1 and the last firing cylinder on the distributor cap and transfer their position to the distributor (marking). So now you have two marks on the distributor. The #1 and the last firing cylinder.
2. Now install the rotor and rotate the front contact edge so its midway between the two marks on the distributor (#1 and last firing cylinder).
3. Drop it in the engine's distributor port until it's all the way down and fully seated. Once in the rotor have to be pointing within 5 degrees of the #1 cylinder when fully seated. With the engine at TDC.You have to get this part right before moving on. So keep adjusting the distributor shaft angle until it's correct. Repeating step 3 above if needed.
You will probably need to rotate the crankshaft manually to seat the distributor correctly. Also you will need to rotate the motor 1full cycle (TDC to the next TDC in the firing order sequence direction).
It's best to remove all the spark plugs when turning the engine manually.
4. Install the ignition wires on the distributor cap in the sequence of the engine's firing order. Now install the wires to the spark plugs matching the correct cylinder number location (plugs already back in the engine).
5. Reinstall ignition coil wire.
6. Loosen distributor advance/regarding screw. Have an assistant crank the engine while you turn the distributor to find the correct timing spot. When you're in the engine's sweet spot the engine should fire and start running. Keep moving the distributor around the #1 cylinder until it does.
7. Once running set the timing with the timing light.
Good luck.
