CEL P0401 Insufficient Exhaust Gas Recirculation

I am due for an emmission test. The CEL has been on and have not been resolved. I can clear it via my OBDII. But it comes back after 20 miles or so.

Will I be able to pass emmission if I just clear it and have it tested?

Anybody's tried this?

I am going to resolve this issue but am running out of time and I am due for my tag.

Somebody was good enough to send me his EGR valve and I was going to get it swapped but have not done it.

Whadya think?

Nope Mandy, it won't pass if they hook up OBD2 scanner to the car. If it is just a visual for check engine light then it may. Their are certain amount of OBD self test monitors that should be complete before computer gives it a green light of passing inspection. You better get your lazy ass off the couch and change the EGR. LOL

My pictures didn't help you at all? You can't get around it just pull out the manifold and clean it with brake cleaner, grill cleaner, and carb cleaner.

Have done that, no go!

I have to get my lazy ass working and change the EGR. Some good fella already sent me his EGR free!

Gotta do it! This weekend, promise.

Thanks, I thought so too.

Gotta hear this, days ago I walk in to the tag office and handed my renewal papers. They scan it and say have you done your emmissions? I said, I still have valid emmissions. No, they are a 1 time use only. You have to do them 1st and then we can give you your tag....

Needless to say...I walked out with my tail in between my you know what

Does the vacuum hose on the EGR hold vacuum though?

The EGR valve itself should hold vacuum, if not, the diaphram is ripped, and the EGR won't open.

Gotcha. Somebody told me to actually watch that EGR trigger and see if the diaphram triggers.

The EGR runs all the time? What triggers the EGR?

Vaccum. You can do a functional test for egr by pushing on diaphram from the bottom of valve itself. Just put your finger in there and push on the diaphram, if engine dies or starts shaking then egr is fine.

And if it does not anything, then it has to be the EGR?

Not necessarily. If the pipe TO the EGR is plugged, opening the EGR won't let anything through. It's like turning the water to a hose; you can turn the knob, but if there's no water getting to that valve, none is going to come out the other side.

I hope that made sense

So if the EGR is pushed and it affects the engine, then EGR is fine. Then my pipes are clogged, right? Just enough to throw a code.

And if when pushed and EGR does not affect the engine, have to change EGR to check if it will solve it. If it does not then it is the passages.

I think I got it.

If you open the EGR, and the engine is affected, then there is a problem beteew the vacuum lines and the EGR valve.

My guess is that the supply pipe to the EGR is clogged. NOT the one from the EGR to the intake manifold (because you cleaned it, right?)

That isn't going to be enough you have to clean this...

This is behind the egr plate connects to the back of the manifold on one end of the egr tube.
This is how it used to look, not saying yours is the same but similar clogging going on....

Good luck.

Well guys, luck was on my side yesterday. I cleared my CEL and went to the emmission test station. I passed. 1 mile after leaving the station the CEL came back.
I will debug this CEL. If it takes for me to take to Acura. They quoted me $385.

Yes! And the CEL came back after 30 miles. I reset and went to the test station and the rest is history.

I have reset it again and so far, 15 miles, no CEL yet. Keeping fingers crossed.

If it comes back, I am taking to the shop.
