Car won't start or shift from park

I had an aftermarket alarm installed and I thought that was the source but my installer removed it and still no luck

THE SYMPTOMS:

The engine will turn over, but just as it's about to start or run on it's own, it dies. My installer says that right at that point, power is "cut" from the igintion. I don't hear that normal electrical whine when you turn the key to the "on" position either. Lastly, I can't get the shifter to shift out of park. WTF?

update

So my windows won't roll down either. I used my key to "unlock" the gear selector, put it in neutral, and tried to start it but same problem exists.

Sounds like a fuel pump/fuel pump relay. Most likely the relay that tells the pump to turn on.

Your windows won't roll down even in II? Are the dash lights coming on, i.e., ABS, CEL, etc.?

If those aren't, then the keyswitch is jumping from I (Acc) to III (Start), and not staying on II (On), which is where it needs to be for the main relay to turn on the fuel pump and power the windows.

~Cheers~

Man I love this website! Once again, thanks for coming through for me, Go90. After you mentioned the dash lights I coudn't remember if they came on or not so I tried and sure enough...no dash lights. So I pressed the windows while I turned the key and they moved for a split second. So I finagled the key and was able to get the key to "stick" in the "II" position and everything worked like normal!

Now the question is: what do I need to fix? The whole ignition switch? I wonder if the guys that stole my car jacked it up?

You only need to replace the keyswitch assy. It's held in place by two smooth, rounded security bolts. You remove the shroud, and back the bolts out by punching edge of bolt w/ cold chisel or hardened punch. They are not tight usually and easy to start turning. Once loose you can back out w/ your fingers. Unplug old switch assy and remove, reinstall new.

good luck

THanks for the instructions! I'll locate a new assy and with a little luck get it done this week.

No problem!

However, I don't think the thieves damaged it that way. They might've damaged the cylinder, but not the switch since it's a normal wear item ESPECIALLY for mid-90's Hondas.

I didn't know that it was a common problem, but I do know. I'm going to order a new ignition assy on Monday. It sounds like it's a pretty easy fix, so I hope to have it fixed tomorrow if they have one in stock.

The key lock mechanism and the key switch assy are two different components linked together (key drives the switch assy w/ a mechanical connection).

good luck

^ Yeah, without that, something that ends in a plus can start the car... I didn't tell you that.

It can be started with a screwdriver, because that's pretty much what the mechanism is, after the cylinder.

be sure to check your fuses under the kick panel driver side. my car would not start nor shift out of gear. come to find out. it was my E.A.T.ECU fuse/etc... i believe it was a 15 fuse .. i replaced it and it shifted and started right up.
