Question A/C problem

I took my car to the mechanic for an A/C problem. I explained that I had to hit under the dashboard on the passenger side so that the A/C would start working. He "checked everything" and said it was the blower. Next day he called me and said the car was ready. When I turned the A/C on there was a lot of air but hot. Now the mechanic says it is the compressor. I don't understand why he didn't' say that at the beginning. Any ideas or advice?

Was the car blowing cold air during the times that it worked? I would check to see if there's refrigerant in the system as I believe that the system has to be discharged in order to get the blower out.
