axle removal

Sure could use some advice. I'm replacing the starter on my 97 TL, discovering that the axel has to be removed. I have the wheel hub off, but can't seem to pop the axle out of the transmission housing. I have pried to the point of breaking off one of the aluminum "ear" but nothing wants to budge. Shouldn't the drive axle come out easily?

Thanks

You might want to private message a person on here that goes by the name of "TexasHonda." He is good with that kind of stuff.

PM me w/ your email and I'll forward a sheet from Mitchell on Demand. It does say the shaft is pried from the differential housing.

Thanks for the replies. Guess I answered my own question by using a 10 pound hammer and a suitable drift. One love tap, and she decided to cooperate.

I would give Honda an 'F' on the starter location, but that would be too kind. Again, appreciate the response.

Walt

I agree, I attempted that replacement about three weeks ago... I gave up when I got to removing the exhaust. Did you finish the install? I attempted replacing mine, after 200 + attempts to start my car and hearing nothing but a dead click.... Irony has a nice side though, after putting everything back together with the old starter still in place, my car has not failed to start once!

Yes, it's finally back together with a new Bosch starter. The drivers side axle has to be disengaged so there is enough room to remove the starter through the front wheel opening. Didn't have to fool with the exhaust.

To add insult to injury, the electrical connections are on the 'blind' side of the starter, such that these must be made before the final mounting.

Hope you starter continues to hold up.
