ABS - DTC Code 51 & 53
ABS - DTC Code 51 & 53
The ABS light on my ride has come on and its steady for a good couple weeks. I pulled the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC):
51 - Motor Lock
53 - Motor Stuck On
I then attempted to erase the codes. However when checking the DTC, code 53 comes up.
I've been reading some posts that the modulator usually needs replacing, however I would like to know how to troubleshoot the modulator and make for certain the pump motor is faulty.
I do not notice any leaks in and around the area.
If someone can lend their expertise with this issue, it will be greatly appreciated.
Also if the modulator is recommended to be replaced, can someone give some advice as the best way to remove it, other than what the service manual says. I am sure there are helpful hints to make the repair smooth and not as messy.
I would like to do the change myself.

I'm not an expert, but I had to replace my modulator assembly several years back. I bought my replacement from Dixie Too Auto Parts

I paid $150 plus $10 freight, but the price may have changed since then?
I probably bought in in 2000.
I used the manual for the job and it was good. There is/are screws/nuts that you can't see from up above.
As others have noted, PLEASE use the wrenches that gor almost all way around the tubing nuts. I rounded off one of mine and it now leaks a little brake fluid and I have to refill the brake fluid reservoir periodically.
Keep us posted on your project. It does sound as if you'll be replacing the modulator. I wouldn't buy from a dealer. It'll cost more than the car's worth lol.

Just an update, thanks to the internet I found a complete wiring diagram for 97-98 3.2TL. I've attached an edited version to show the ABS wiring.
I did some more investigating with a DVM. I removed the connection to the ABS Pump Motor (B1, B2), it measured +12V, which indicates the ABS Pump Motor Relay is energized. I then removed the ABS Pump Motor Relay and it still measured +12V across the ABS Pump Motor, yes I am officially confused.
Anyone can chime in.

Here's the link to all the wiring schematics, they have both trims 2.5 and 3.2, they also have 3.5RL, 2.2CL, 3.0CL, Integra and SLC
