97 3.2TL trouble code P0740 and P0401
Hello everyone Im new to the Acura scene. I recently purchased a 97 Acura 3.2 TL. Driving back from purchasing it the check engine light came on. It never changed the performance of the car. This was a 3 hour drive. The next day driving it to Autozone to get a code scan I notice when I put the car in gear sometimes the shifter gear display in the instrument cluster light ups sometimes in gear and sometimes it wouldnt. I notice opon driving that if I nail it and the gear light wasn't on in the dash the transmisson would not go into its gears. Arrived to autozone got code read. P0401 and P0740. Any advice from some of u Acura Vets would be great help. Thanks in advice.
P0401 has to do with reduced EGR system flow. But it's not necessarily as simple as just replacing the EGR valve. I've had that code on a couple of other cars (not the Acura) and solved it by removing the intake manifold and cleaning the carbon out of the EGR passage as well as the EGR valve itself and making sure that all the attending wiring and piping is good. Never had the PO740 but research shows that it has several possible causes. Among those are bad torque converter lockup solenoid, bad engine coolant temperature sensor, bad torque converter clutch, bad valve body, or dirty transmission fluid that restricts the hydraulic passages.
