3.2 "Y" pipe exhaust shield needed?

Just got done replacing head gaskets on my '97 TL. Removing the "y" pipe exhaust from driver's side was so so frustrating I destroyed the original heat shield (which is about a foot long just below the exhaust manifold). I didn't realize that the heat shield can't be purchased without buying the entire "Y" pipe (over $300). I installed a Thermotec heat shield wrap with stainless steel clamps around that area of the exhaust but it smokes and smells nasty, even though it's supposed to be suited for header applications.
Anyone here running without that shield installed? There is no shield on the passenger side. The shield must be protecting components on the driver's side from overheating? Any input is appreciated.

all it will do is make your car hotter. and the wrap you used, if its not super cheap is suppossed to smoke at first then stop once it cures.
