1997 TL 2.5 ROUGH IDLE. What do I do?

I just bought this car a few weeks ago, and it started idling rough at red lights.

Is there something I need to know about this car?

I have had a varying idle for a few months now and after talking to a mechanic he said that I need a replacement relay switch of some sort. He obviously didn't know what he was talking about because after he replaced it the problem persisted, but it has lessened since I have been using the AC less since summer is starting to end. My problem is somehow correlated with my AC but don't have the money to deal with it now. Sorry I couldn't help tho.

Is the idle bouncing or is the car vibrating with a steady engine speed?

~Cheers~

Question

Go90go: The car is shaking/vibrating at red light or any stationary position.

HighMileage2.5: As for the a/c, it also not working...blowing hot air.

i dont know if this will help but my 1996 2.5TL was idling rough at one point and i ended up getting a tune up. i had a misfire with one of the spark plugs, i think, if that makes any sense, but they were changed, and the problem ended. go somewhere where they'll diagnose your engine for free, like autozone. does your check engine light come on ever?

If the idle speed is dropping low, perhaps < 600 rpm, the idle will be unstable and lot's of vibration. Cause is inadequate idle air and problem is usually a dirty throttle plate and dirty idle air control valve. Remove intake duct and clean throttle plate. Remove idle air control valve (IACV) and clean passages and valve. Use throttle body cleaner. Check IACV for function w/ a power supply or battery voltage.

good luck
