tell tale signs of a timing belt change
Folks
Is there an easy way to identify if the timing belt has been changed?
Even if a visual inspection cannot reveal anything - is this something a mechanic can figure out by opening up a few nut and bolts - or is it embeded deep deep down in the engine and checking it out needs a ton of time/lots of digging?
Also assuming there is way a mechanic can get to the timing belt to check it out - can he tell just by looking at it - whether it has been changed or not?
Thanks

well i am not sure if there is an easy way to check the timing belt other than just popping the cover off... a good mechanic should be able to do this and do a visual inspection of the belt... u can check for wear and if the belt has cracks in it... but it does not truely tell u exactly how much longer u can go... how much mileage u got on it??? even if it looked fine, i would change it out every 105k miles.... its preventative investment that can keep your car running for a very long time...

Replacing the belt is probably the best preventive maintenance u can do, especially on honda's/acura's cause of the interefence engine design.
Signs of a timing belt change - check the belt, but even a visual inspecting might not reveal all u need to know.
When ur pistons collide with the valves, u defintely know its time for a new belt! (and a new engine too!)

Thanks for the replies...
I bought it of a lady who promised me that the car had new brakes and a timing belt - but had no paper work. I can see it has new brakes but there's no way for me to see it has a timing belt or not...so I wondering if I could find out somehow if it has indeed been changed...

HONESTLY the best thing to do if you are not too sure that the timing belt has been changed is to go ahead and do it. after 100k pretty much it is mandatory and if you had the car more than a couple of months or before the 100k mark go ahead and do it. stop being cheap y'all!! It is better spend a little now on that timing belt than to shit out a couple grand on a new head job!! Or a new car!

The dealer qouted me $850.00 smackers. He stated it was all in labor but that all the belts would be replaced including the water pump. I'm planning on having it done this summer. good luck!
