White smoke.

So, if I am idling for a while and as soon as I step on the gas, a cloud of smoke comes out of my exhaust. It's like a smoke screen from spy hunter. My mechanic says that I am burning oil. anyone else has this problem?

Sounds like a bad piston ring

Really? would that cause the engine to burn oil?

yes. bad piston ring means engine oil can enter combustion chamber resulting in white smoke out of tailpipe.

replacing a piston ring would be expensive? I am wondering why my mechanic didn't see that.

Did he do a compression test? That would be the best way to determine it.

I didn't ask him. Why would idling make it worse though? When I do stop and go at say red light it's fine. even when I do stop and go in traffic it's fine but too. When say I am sitting waitng for someone or if I get caught in a really bad traffic jam then as soon as I give it gas a lot of smoke comes out. It eventually burns off though.

If it's from stopping, it's probably a valve cover gasket. That's a HELLUVA lot cheaper to replace than piston rings.

~Cheers~

+1. Thick white smoke from the exhaust? I'm guessing it's the head gasket.

If it's the HG, the temp gauge should be hopping up and down, and you might even hear bubbling from the coolant overflow. It happened to me...

~Cheers~
