ughhhhhh *sigh*

what is it with me and brakes, and them not working properly? so here is the condition:

when i stop (at random times) my brake pedal will all of a sudden get mushy, and go to the floor. if i push it to the floor, and let up even a bit, i start to roll. now...if i let off and immediately push the brake it again..it sort of 'resets' back to normal. but it can also go mushy again in a matter of seconds. also, and this could be from just the mushy feeling....when this happens, my accelerator feels extra hard/sensitive. i'm boggled. this is so random, i can't tell what could be causing it. thought weather, but it's warm today and it did it. any thoughts??

I'm not sure, but it sounds like something to do with the fluid/pump. I think air in the lines causes the pedal to sink to the floor?

The accelerator feeling different may just be that because all of teh sudden the change in feel in the brake pedal messes you up into feeling the accelerator differently. More of a mental thing.

Are you asking him, me, or is it a possible problem?

Sounds like your master cylinder. I had the same problem a long while ago and the shop told me that the insides of the master cylinder have worn out because of lack of maintenance.

How would you go about maintaining it? I have never heard much about it, other than when it fails.

Could be one of the internal seals in the master cylinder causing the brake fluid to bypass back into the reservoir instead being forced into the brake lines.

That's it. That's what my mechanic said. He told me to keep changing the brake fluid every 30k miles along with the automatic tranny fluid.

hmmm ok. well it could very well be the master cylinder. when you say you got it fixed....what did that entail? master cylinder + 'fix' usually = $$$$$ (which i now don't have). the car still stops, so if i have to put up with it and that's the worst that will happen.....i'll deal with it for now. btw......thanks for the good responses all

It was about $350 to replace. They were also nice enough to spray paint the drum because they told me it was leaking brake fluid too so they sanded it down and repainted it.

sorry if i want clear. hah . umm. well what u described in your first post is exactly.. i mean exactly what was happening to me. The mushy braking, i step on the brake, the car 'will slow down' but then the pedal go mushy n drops right to the floor, n i will start to roll again. [Btw, worst time to start happening at a red light] So its like if i have to stop really quickly, i can, i juss stomp on the brake n ill stop.. but then later itll drop n ill roll like i have no brakes n i had to use my ebrake juss to stay in one spot. ... and when i said 'fix' i ment i bought a new master cylinder, which cost me less cuz my brothers' friend is cool i guess n he put it on for less.. $200 total.. Sorrie about it being long-

[btw air is in the lines is y the brakes is mushy, but its the bad master cylinder that cause (put) the air in the lines] im an idiot, i thought it was juss bad brakes pad, n he [bros' friend] said my master was in really bad shape - if i waited, i could have lost all power to brake n stop. which ive herd is not good lolz-
