Transmission Clunk noise

Does anyone's 3.2TL tranny make a clunk noise when shifting from 1st to 2nd? I'm on my 2rd replacement tranny and it is doing it again. The dealer said it is not a common thing and can't figure it out. I'm wordering if the sudden jerk when the tranny shifts is causing something else to make that noise.

damn, call in the dealership and talk to the parts department... dont talk to anybody else, they'll make you come in no matter what....just to make money. just talk to the parts department and tell them your problem. what i suggest you do is do a transmission flush.....bring up that idea to the parts guy and see what he says.

Going from Park to any gear on an incline isn't a problem if you hear a Clunk.
Going from 1st to 2nd gear with noise is a problem.

All cars will make some sort of noise from Park to any gear IF the car is parked on an incline. The tranny locks the wheels in Park vs Neutral where you can push the car. Since an incline puts pressure on the tranny while in Park, the clunk will be louder with steeper incline or grade.

Try using your hand brakes Before putting the car in PARK. Then move the car into Gear and let the hand brakes go. The clunk will be must softer.

As for the original post about the 1st and 2nd gear, ask the Dealer if they can re-set the tranny software. I do not know if that is possible with a modic or what but I've heard these Tranny can adapt to our driving. so meaning it could shift harder if we have a lead foot. however the dealers i've called around SoCal didn't know anything about this but I'm pretty sure I've got this info correct.

Resetting the tranny software will allow the tranny to pick up on your driving however if you drive your car real hard... you could end up with similar shift noise again.

If you're real hard on the car from a Stop and Go then this could be it... another option is to drive like a grandma for 3 thank fulls and see if the tranny will adapt.

Also a tranny fluid change wouldn't hurt.

You know I thought I was the only one that had this problem. A friend of mine who has a RL has the same problem and he thinks it is just Acura cars. I was tempting to take it to the dealer but they're like 75 just to look at it and they will waive it if I do the work but I don't know what the freakin problem is. It sounds like something is going to break. Are there any solutions to this problem?

Thanks for all the input guys. This could be a design problem with TL transmissions, however my Acura service guy denys it. This is the 2nd replacement transmission in my car and it is only 6 months old and I've already had a full transmission service done and paid $160 to drain the entire transmission. I drive fast, but don't hammer it off the line.

I took my car in last week for the mechanic to listen to the clunk noise and he heard it on the road test, however when he put it up on the hoist to pin-point the location, he couldn't get it to clunk.

I'm dropping off my car next week and they will try to make the noise happen first thing in the morning because it seems to be worse when the transmission is cold. I'll keep you posted.

Anyone ever find the solution for this? My buddy has a 97 3.2TL and it's making this noise as well. Just when pushing the gas kind of hard from 1st to 2nd it will make this clunking noise. Maybe a tranny mount, cv shaft ????

Ideas or answers ?
