Tranny Swap

Has anyone here done a manual tranny swap for their cars?

Example: Vigor 5 speed put into 2.5 TL
Legend 6 speed in a 3.2 TL

cool

i bet it would be cool, but EXPENSIVE i wouldn't do it, cause our cars look to CLASSY for a manual if you ask me, we need autos because of the classic design of our cars

Too classy? Naww, to each his own I suppose. The Legend had a 5 speed, later 6 speed manual as an option with the 230 hp Type II engine. That sucker was FAST and fun.

What our TL's really need is 5 gears, stick or auto would fix that.

Expensive? Probably not. Just have to find a tranny and pop it in. Everything should fit right since its the same chassis and drivetrain in the 3.2's case.

Manual transmissions are FAR FAR cheaper than auto's and far less complex.

Then I guess an Audi S6 isn't classy (6-Speed)?

Exactly! There are PLENTY of classy cars that offer manual transmissions.

The CL offered a 6 speed, the Vigor had a 5 speed manual, the Accord Couple has a 6 speed and so will the new TL. Its all about choice

good points

well i guess you guys are right, i forgot all about the audi's that have 6 speeds, and my dream car is a BMW 540i 6-speed, and those are supa classy, and yea manuals are always cheaper than autos but finding a 6-speed legend trans, don't you think those are rare if you even can find one, but hey you got my VOTE , go for it, if its in a 18yr old budget (which isn't that much) , HEY I MIGHT EVEN GET ONE LOL, but yea anywho i agree with you guys about classy, i stand corrected

I got connections with a Honda dealership (I used to work there) and if I can actually FIND a 6 speed tranny from a Legend... they'll do it for $950. Problem is... finding the 6 speed and then whatever they want for it.

Yeah, it fits according to different techs I've asked. The 5 and 6 speed manual trannies from the Legend fit in the 3.2 TL's as well.

the questionable problem with a situation like this isn't whether the tranny will adapt to the engine, but whether the chassis will adapt the manual tranny. For example, the hole for the shifter, will the shift linkage be to short? etc.

The chassis are close enough.

In case of the Legend and the 3.2 TL, they're the same powertrain and chassis (from the B pillar forward they're the same) so a swap is easy.

In the case of the 2.5 and the Vigor, I'm not sure but I know it is close. (not sure about measurements).

I've been pondering this myself for a long time, but the problem is that as with almost every other car, the computers are usually different for the manual and auto cars. You would most likely need to replace that as well. Harnesses, etc are different. If the DEALER says they can do it for $950, and it will work!? That's awesome. If you end up going ahead with it PLEASE let me know, I'd be very interested. SOOO many times I've wanted to be able to throw it into 2nd coming around a corner instead of having to wait for the tranny to change itself......DREAMS....
