steering wheel removal..

hey everyone,
so far i have my airbag removed and cover plates around my wheel. it looks like all i have to do now it take off the center bolt. my plans are to straighten my wheels and then once i get the nut to the top of the threads tap with a hammer while pulling on the wheel to free it up. ? ?

it seems pretty straightforward the airbag didnt go off atleast! i'm doing this so i can paint the covers black. they are all worn and look like shit. i need some ideas though for the actual steering wheel thats wrapped in that vinyl.. should i paint it? cut it off and see whats underneath? some ideas would help as ill be working on this today.. thanks again!!

You will need a puller to pull the wheel off easily. what cover are you trying to take off btw??

pretty much all the covers surrounding the wheel, even the larger access panel under the steering wheel. i know it will look good the car has enough black inside to even it out.

i also pulled at the vinyl and it peels off pretty clean, underneath is black plastic! im going to be removing the leather that wraps the wheel because its all worn to shit.

oh yeah i watched some youtube videos, i feel comforatable taking it off without a puller. im gonna use the 2 knees approach, a friend and 2 hammers

UPDATE : i just bought the puller for $16 at autozone since i needed some paint anyways. everything went like cake. i cut off the old leather and its a pretty fresh black steering wheel. the accessory pieces are being painted to match..

one thing, i installed everything correct and met up the marks that was on the bolt. when i drive now on the highway or anywhere and am going straight the wheel is tilted slightly to the right. should i pull it back off and re-install it a couple splines over?

The manual says that if the steering wheel is tilted after putting back the steering wheen, there's a bolt underneath the car to fix it.

sorry guys i dont have a camera!!!!!!!!!!!! i still have it all taken apart, all thats on is the actual wheel. i had to lock the wheel to break off the bolt. after work im gonna pull the wheel again, then re-install a couple teeth down on the column. i am not going to torque the wheel fully down though so i can pop it off without the puller if it needs more adjusting.

btw guys - steering wheel looks awesome in black.. if theres ever a meet hopefully someone will snap some shots for you all.

oh yeah there was already a mark on the bolt head to line everything back up, even though it is right on the mark its still off about 2 inches ( wheel is slanted to go straight)
