Spark plugs????

So what's everybody using in their rides? I've priced several, do our cars require iridium or platinum and what did you pay for them...

Thanks.....

I just used regular Denso spark plugs from the dealership.

I'm using NGK Iridium IXs. No point for the Iridium Power... Yet.

I though Platinum was better and I use dual Bosch Platinums in my 2.5... I went with what I was told too "Platinum is better for Premium vehicles etc..." WRONG!

What does size have to do with it? Less voltage is required for a smaller center electrode and results in better ignitability. The smaller the electrode, the more centralized the electrical potential is around the electrode tip. The required voltage can be reduced because the level of the electric field is made stronger and local insulation (air gap and electrode surface oxidation) breaks down more easily. The bottom line is that it takes approximately 5,000 volts less to fire a Denso Iridium Power spark plug versus a conventional platinum spark plug.

So why not just make a smaller diameter electrode spark plug out of platinum? It just wouldn't last. The small-diameter center electrode reaches much higher temperatures. Iridium's melting point is 700 degrees C higher than platinum, and laboratory tests have shown that with the same-size electrode iridium, plugs were four to five times as resistant to wear as platinum. Much of Denso's R&D went into finding the perfect iridium alloy (90% iridium, 10% rhodium) that would provide 200,000 miles of service, and working out the manufacturing process to "draw" the electrode into the extremely small .4mm-diameter wire.

^ I didn't get 200,000 miles out of my set of Iridium IXs, and it's a .6mm electrode. The Iridium Powers are the ones with the .4mm electrode.

So I take it that you guys are using the iridium NGK's,,,,, If so what's the gap on them ... It to my understanding that you can't gap without tearing up the electrode? I am I correct or did I read some mis-info??? Anyway thanks for replying...

^ Do not re-gap them. IIRC, the gap is .44, but I could be wrong. It's not the tip that breaks, it's the "stalk" that holds it up.

gap is the distance from the electrode to the center core thing, dont mess with that!!!
Use NGK Iridium IX or NGK Platinum, NGK outlast denso ~
about 7 bucks each at local parts stores

Torque is how tight you screw them in. On the plugs box it will give a hand tightening measure- usually finger tight plus 1/3 -1/4 of a turn with the ratchet

sounds confusing about the tightness of the plugs,, the socket i use doesn't describe anything.. i just tighten it just enough and not over doing it.. omg the spark wires cap thing.. it was so hard to take out.. there isn't any room to take out one of the screws... i end up just tighten one screw and the other screw is not that tight
