Retaining Screws in rotors causing vibrations?
Retaining Screws in rotors causing vibrations?
Curious to see if anyone had any vibrations at highways speeds above 75mph due to lack of rotor retaining screws??
I cannot drive over 75 or my car begins to rumble from the front end. feels like it is coming from the left suspension. The rumbling always begins 74-76mph and I have to back off the accelerator. it gets progressivly worse beyond 75.
I have had this type of problem for many months. It began when I changed my front rotors... The heads of the retaining screws were broken off with an impact wrench b/c the screws were siezed..
On the right hub both retaining screw treads are rusted into the hub and the screws have been filed down to the same height.
On the left hub one screw was extracted and the other remains.
I am on the second set of rotors and pads since the original rotor change. I'm using brembo oem spec rotors and ceramic hawk pads.
I am on a second pair of tires as well. I have had 3 complete wheel balances since the problem began as well as 2 Full Alignments.
Has anyone had a similar problem and been able to fix it?????

Hey dude, yea thats odd about your car I wish i could offer some advice but im out offering help to people who get vibrations from being unaware of snow in there wheels...... the snow is complicated and requires a lot of head scratching... if i have time i might come back to you.

My understanding is these screws are an installation aid during manufacture and don't provide any function during operation. The lugs position and hold the rotors in place. I assume these are floating rotors (not retained to bearing hub). For sure trapped rotors don't need these screws.
Vibration could be mis-balanced tire/wheel, bent tire rim, or loose ball joint. Suggest an inspection by a good suspension shop.
good luck

Texashonda,
you always provide a logical and thorough response. Much thanks.
Also do you think a loose tie rod could allow my wheel to wiggle under certain highway driving senarios and produce the unbalanced wheel feeling??
Realized there is some play in the wheel that i have recently noticed.
weaving while highway driving reduces the amplitude of vibration.

I have the diagram of the steering components. I dont see the ball joint on there. I dont see what parts could wear and allow for significant play. Is this the wrong diagram.?
so I dont know how to upload an im/its too much work..
http://www.acuraoemparts.com/delray/...All&vinsrch=no
should be the link. the system/diagram is labeled "P.S. GEAR BOX (V6)"
not sure what to look for....

My alignment couldn't be completed b/c , Townfair Tire, didn't want the resposiblity of "breaking" the part free for adjustment.
Which parts are required for adjustment of the alignment that are probubly effected??
or perhaps a better question, what specific parts are required to be free to adjust the alignment properly?

the tie rod is the only place to make an adjustment- it has a threaded shaft that makes it longer or shorter, and a couple of big nuts that hold it in the location selected.
Spray the nuts and threads with wd40 or penetrating lube of your choice- do it again for 2-4 days if needed- then all should be able to loosen and adjust
Go to a name brand tire store for alignment- or alignment specialty shop
A good place will know how to do it without hurting the car parts
Unless there is something else in the story we have not heard- like, : we cant fix that- you need a new tie rod in order to fix the noise and allow adjustment!!

So I had a 250+ pound football LineMan in my car today we drive over 80 Mph Without any noticable vibration!!!!! So frustrating I was hoping I could get a fellow Collegue to feel first hand what my car was doing.
Any thoughts as to why My 5-10 mile trip on the highway over 80 didn't vibrate with an extra passenger?
It is raining today.......
I think i have driven through a big puddle once while having some vibration in the steering wheel and after driving through the water the vibration went away.............. I was a mile from my destination at that point so it didn;t have a chance to see if it would come back.......

Well I think the past few months of randoms vibration has been cured with Caliper replacement....Had the front calipers replaced Saterday morning, drove around sunday and then the 60mi drive @ 75-80mph to work this morning, without a problem....Can;t believe it ended up being the calipers.....
now i can feel is smaller vibration in the pedal/wheel, im going to attribute to a single original-to-the-car rear caliper that was diffcult to turn in last time i tested it out.
guess that ends this threadd...
Thanks to all for the input.

get the rear calipers replaced or the prob will continue
Changing the brake fluid every year will help the life and function of the calipers- but anything over 100-150k miles is reasonable time to need to replace them,
AND the master cylinder- especially if the old calipers have rust indication inside the caliper-
