Replaced diff fluid today

Very easy to do for anyone who was wondering, only a little bit more involved than the oil.

Hardest part for me was getting the tubing into the filler hole.

My old fluid was nasty. Seems to cruise a little bit quieter now, may just be mental though.

Any questions, just ask. I know some other people have done it, someone will chime in.

I was pondering what that process would involve. Glad to hear it is easy. I will add that to my list of things to do, along with.....alternator belt, coolant change, tranny filter, egr replace, cable reel replace, tires, front brakes, struts....and about 20 other things that NEED to get done. Yikes, thats a lot of work...I think I'll start tomorrow.

cable reel replace?

The diff fluid, you will need a funnel and tubing, i believe mine was 3/8 ID 1/2 OD, and was a little tight, 3/8 OD would be ideal.

Undo the plug on the bottom (1/2 ratchet with or without an extension right into it) and drain the fluid. Replace the drain plug, and undo the fill plug (mounted horizontally) Put the tubing into it, running it from a funnel above the engine. Fill till it overflows, just about 1 quart. Replace fill plug.

2 quarts of fluid, 2 washes, 3 feet of hose and a funnel all came out less than $15 so it's not too bad at all.

to allow the old fluid to drain easier, i would loosen the fill plug first...

Come to think of that, I actually did do that.

I made sure I could get the tube into the fill hole before I drained it since it is a bit of a tight fit. Swore a couple times doin that one.

I think it was worth doing, things seem a bit smoother now, but then again, I have no idea if the fluid had ever been changed, it came out pretty nasty.

I do it every 15K miles, as the manual specifies. We are talking about changing oil that plays a mjor role in the proper operation of our TLs, so I would highly recommend it be done, even if you hire someone.

The hardest part, as mentioned, it refilling. But that is not hard, esp compared to draining. You can buy some tubing from a hardware store and use a funnel that fits into the tubing to refill. I think you only need a quart or so, so not too much. It takes maybe 30 min to do and is not needed that often.
