Question from newbie (ABS)
Question from newbie (ABS)
Hello all. I've been browsing these forums for some time now (without registering) and learning things here and there.
I am pretty much a do it your selfer, but do not have any modifications on my car as I speak. Actually started browsing this great site as I am getting ready to do my timing belt and water pump.
However, I recently had a strange problem. When I was braking, everything would work fine till I was almost about stopped (<2 mph) My car would slip forward a couple feet as if my brakes would slip. I determined through a few days and inspection that it was my ABS system and not the brakes. I confirmed this as I decided to yank one of the fuses from the ABS control unit and the problem stopped.
Main question here is regarding the ABS tester I read about in the Mitchell On-Demand repair program. i understand that I can get the DTC's simply by shorting the 2 pin connector and recording the dash lights. But the testing procedures to find out the ABS problem talks about a separate ABS tester tool that connects to an orange 6 pin connector and runs diagnostics in different sequences to help locate the specific area.
Does anyone know if this is necessary to troubleshoot my ABS system and if so, is it available reasonably cheaply? (not 500 dollars) Also has any else encountered this strange slow speed slipping problem? (none of my experienced friends has ever had this) I really dislike the idea of having to let the dealer rape me for this one (probably tell me to replace the whole system and I have no way to argue otherwise) since I can simply live without the ABS if necessary.
I thank any advice in advance and look forward to posting with more of you in the future. Phil
