Power Steering Pump
Power Steering Pump
I recently had my 97 3.2TL serviced and the technician determined my power steering leak issues stem from a bad power steering pump. I would really like to avoid paying to have it replaced.
Does anyone here have any experience replacing their power steering pump?
A DIY guide would be spectacular and I may end up writing one if someone can give me some insight on where to start.
Is this going to require the engine to be pulled? Thus far this is the only means by which I can see of taking it out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really want to get the TL back on the streets.

Manual makes it sound easy; remove air box, remove belt, disconnect hoses, and remove pump. It's all on one page. PM your email address and I'll send the page to you.
I have a 2.5TL which may be similar. This looks to me to require removal of the pax side cooling fan for more reasonable access. Underside access (ramps or jack stands) looks to be necessary also.
good luck

Thanks for the info. I'm trying to juggle school and work and life on constant basis so unfortunately there was no time for a DIY write-up. It turned out to be rather simple. It's basically exactly how you described it and the only hiccup I ran into was the mounting bolt on the bottom. I had to use a breaker bar to get it out and remove the pulley first to get the bar in there.
hey. I've had my power steering pump replaced... twice. One however, was from a junk yard. It only lasted a little over a month before i was back to the noise of the bearings dying.
Order yourself a remanufactured one. I got mine from autopartswarehouse.com It was about 250 if i remember correctly. I believe the labour and fluid came to 160 or so. Depending on how bad your old pump was and how long you were driving with the bad pump being drivin, you may have a lot of ground metal in your P/S system. this may require multiple flushes to ensure the safety of the new pump.
hope this bit of info helps.
by the way i think i got the A1 cardone..or something. no problems and she steers like a dream for about 7 months now, daily highway and city driving.
edit: im a 3.2, 1997
