I'm gonna be cleaning/painting most of the stuff on the motor as they proceed so that it will look nice and clean when it gets into the car.

Yeah, its a big motor but its quite 'low' in terms of the height of the motor, considering its an overhead cam engine.

90 degree design is what keeps it compact in that sense. Honda has always had this near fetish with low hoods

Haha...thanks Spook. If I had more $$$$, time and tools myself, I'd be getting the heads and intake ported. I still might, once the heads are off, I may send them to my friend to have him port them for me....we'll see. THAT will definately put me over Ken. I am gonna get my ECU custom programmed once it is all in the car by a local guy. I'm gonna put it on the dyno when it's all done to put up some hard nmbers to shoot for.

Nice pics, everything is so smashed together...I always though 4 cyl honda motors were compact and lacking open space.

Thanks guys....Yeah TooCoo, I was originally planning on doing a 3.2 Type II head on an RL block, (a la Dv8 from the Legend forum....) But well...I'm good, I'm just not THAT good! LOL Just don't have the time or $$$ to spend on that. But this should still work out well....
LDH- No kidding! Everything has a place on this sucker!! Gonna be a bitch to take in and out I think.....

That's about 250 at the motor pretty good bro.... If I do end up porting everything, I'll hope to be at around the 260-270 HP range. Not hoping for too much more torque though, hard to get with this motor. But 260 HP will DESSIMATE many cars on the highway though.

Cornflake and Ken ... thou shalt desamate (sp?) the third gens - showem who's their daddy. :gheywave:

Yeah, i think i overdid the smilies. Nice to see yall keeping our 1st gen up and running ahead of the game even a decade down the road. Ken for example, is doing 0-60 in less than 7 secs and quarters in the 14s. Thats enough grunt to dust off a Bimmers e.g. that 330ci he spanked a while back, MB, and run with auto tranny 3rd gens. I say a job well done. It seems like the c32 motor has a lot of potential. Good job guys, keep it up. And to all u 2.5tl owners out there - i understand aftermarket support is limited, but there's always a way. Vigor MT tranny, custom turbo, etc. - be creative.

Echoing slownlow's sentiments: "We own luxo cruisers not rice burning pocket rockets; keep it custom but classy"

Yeah, they're at 270 hp but more realistically 275 or 280 hp.

A 6 speed manual may be in the works but i'm looking at an '06 RL. '97 TL will either go to my brother or my g/f.

It all depends

Too bad, I'll be keeping mine. Buying a house next, then a 1st Gen Navigator. The TL will still be around. And Spook, I am SERIOUSLY considering 5/6 spd conversion next winter. Finally decided to do a minor porting job on the heads and intake too. Should be pushing about 250 HP once installed. Will have both dyno number and track times in the spring, no worries.

Congrats Cornflake!! (Proud to see a Canadian Type II 1st Gen TL!!)

This may be an inappropriate spot to ask, but I've searched this forum and acura-lengend.com, and DV8 managed to put a RL block in his type II legend. Considering the 2002 RL is 225HP/224ft/lbs Torque, do you guys think that would fit in a 1st gen TL? (Very little information, but I can't find a site that confirms if the new engine in the 2002 RL is a J block or C block, but consumer guide says the RL didnt change engine platforms from 1996-2003).

This is the first time i have seen a Type II engine! Wow. Looks like a pretty serious engine swap. Congrats. My younger brother has a 92' legend and it's his daily driver. I have the big daddy: 2000 3.2TL Of course though I have to pay for mine while he is part of the M&D financial club! Good luck with the swap and post some hard numbers when you are done!

The '96 - '04 RL is a C35 engine. And yes, its a direct fit

Its has a longer stroke so it has a slightly taller deck height, just removing the plastic cover should suffice.

We now have TWO 1st gen TL's with the Type II head swap

Not quite, but we should in a few more weeks. I haven't had time (or a car to drive!) to run around and pick up the last few items. Now have the Scirocco fixed, so next weeks day off will be spent picking up the last few gaskets and dropping them off at the shop. Soon as I do that, the following Friday car will be brought in to get the motors swapped!! WOHOOO!!! MiGHT ACTUALLY HAVE MY RIDE RUNNIN BEFORE SPRING!!!

FINALLY got over to the dealer yesterday and ordered and payed for the last few parts needed to at least get the new motor ready to go!!! Still have to get a new rad and type II ecu before it can go into the car, but at least now my boy can start tearing it open and porting out the heads and intake... Ken, I GOTTA find the bayou chip to go with it too....how much are they again? Do you have the dude's contact that makes them?

So I spoke with the Bayou guys, they are gonna send me a chipped ECU, so that just means I don't have to find one somewhere else. SOOO...Calculating HP with a CONSERVATIVE addition for the porting of the intake and heads, the muffler (soon to be 3" cat-back), and the short-ram intake....I am figuring about 265-270 HP total.....HOLY S#$% this car is gonna be nuts...I think now I'm gona have to add a sneaky pete 40 shot of spray to push me over the 300 HP mark.....

i heard that quite a few bayou chips had problems i.e. when installed in legends, the tcs light would come on and the cars would not rev over 4000rpm. Hopefully the chip their sending u has none of these problems.

If u dont mind me asking, i got 2 ?s

1. How much $$$ is this costing (type II bayou chip)
2. Whats the contact info if someone wants to get this chip.

Thanks and props to you. BTW, do you think that the 270ish HP your gonna be putting out is gonna mess up ur tranny?

Most of those problems were because TCS equipped cars need their own chip. I'm guessing those people bought the wrong chip (meant for non-TCS vehicles)

Also, alot of problems were from other chips that were made as COPIES of the Bayou chips. Bayou is the company that actually bought the license from Dinan. There was another guy who was supposedly making chips with a COPY of the bayou/dinan program, and these were the ones that had more problems.

Bayou charges $299 for the Modded chip, and I will just be paying the $75 core charge to get a Type II ecu, saves me having to source one out and it's actually a good price anyways. I haven't got a price on shipping, but $375 for the 40-50 HP improvement I will get by plugging in the Type II ecu is WELL worth it in my books!! The contact info is: Willie Johnson [pureperformanceproducts@autospeed.com]

SIZE and BLOCK wise, it's exactly the same as ours (3.2L). It's from a Legend GS sedan. 30 more HP than the TL's (which is the same as the Legend LS sedan) due to better head design. I am having it mildly ported and polished and adding the Bayou ECU. I am SLIGHTLY worried about the tranny. There is a guy on CarDomain who says he re-programmed his tranny to increase the fluid pressure, which I WANT to do, but I haven't been able to get a hold of him to find out where he got the programmer for it. If the tranny DOES give out, it will be the perfect opportunity to do my 5 or 6 spd conversion.

Damn... I didn't know our TL's engines were that big. Too bad they don't get the 30 extra ponies though.

Sorry dude, was just going over this thread and realized I hadn't replied to you. I got the engine at Standard Auto Wreckers in the n.e. end of Scarborough. I paid $1050 before tax with a 1 year warranty. Not bad, supposedly has 96000 kms, so half of what my TL's got now. And thanks dude, car actually looks better now, has clear bumper lenses and a few other mods now. Will have blacked out headlights and cleared tails before the April 8 Acura meet (i hope).

I'm hoping to get it there! I'm sure the tranny will eventually crack under the pressure, but that will just give me an excuse for the 6 spd swap.
