Its mileage based, letting you know when to change your oil

They turn frm green to yellow and from yellow to red. They turn once you pass a certain number of miles after resetting it to green. All it is for is to let you know that you have to change or oil. red means change now. But rmember in our cr manuals they say to change oil every 7000 miles. I still go every 3000 to 4000. And only run Mobil 1 synthetic

To reset it, poke that thing next to it with your key.

If the car has more than 100k miles on it, I recommend NOT to use synthetic oil. Synthetic oil has detergent properties that can wash away sludge that builds up around the seals and may cause oil leaks. So I recommend NOT to change the oil to synthetic.

I have been running mobil1 for three years and I got 110,000 miles? Are you saying that I should switch to regular oil? I know if you run normal oil it is not always good to switch to synthetic. But sine I have been running mobil1 for three years and the guy who had the car before me also ran mobil1 should I just stay with the mobil1?

You know I was thinking, if all that has ever been run in the engine is synthetic then you should not have to worry about breaking down sludge build up and what ever kind of sludge is in the engine would be from synthetic oil. Right? But if you switch from regular oil to synthetic then you would have to worry about breaking down the sludge around seals. Does any of that jibberish make sense

Sure, of course it makes sense.

BINGO!! You're perfectly right. That is why you want to switch to synthetic after a couple of oil changes or within 60k or 70k miles. That way, it won't cause too much "damage".

FYI, I've heard that today's synthetics have much more mild detergents, so they work gradually and can rejuvenate seals while slowly working out the sludge, making leaks much less likely.
