HIDs!!

Which HID bulb size should I order with my conversion kit?

First off, I have already tried searching the forums for the answer, and I ended up getting REALLY confused about it.

I've seen the sylvania thing say 9003, i've seen people say H4, d2r, d2s. Now which one is the right size for a 97 3.2TL??

I just purchased this car last saturday and plan on putting some work into it..

This is my first post and I plan on staying on this forum!

Thanks

You want h4 d2r.

H4 is our size, i posted something a LONG time ago about 9003 being the same size as H4, but I'm not 100% on that. Do a search on threads started by me and it should be there.

d2r is for reflective housing headlights like ours. d2s is for projector housings like the 04+ TLs.

http://faqlight.carpassion.info/hl-hid-bulbs.htm

Another thing, I have heard that Kaixen are one of the the best direct plug and play out there. No modifications, no retrofitting, just install the ballasts, stick the bulbs where they belong and they are golden.

Last but not least WELCOME ABOARD!!!

Welcome! H4 = 9003. Anyhow, make sure you have Casper shields for the lights as the glare will be pretty bad without them (if not aimed properly).

Thanks for the quick response! Now that I'm a little more knowledgeable I can do some shopping around. I looked up the Kaixen and the pricing isn't too bad either.

yes but you'll have to wire up the ballast to the stock wiring harness though too.

Basically yes. It looks like this:

You put the bulbs where they belong like normally, then hook up all the wires as needed and then BAM HID's.

I mean plug and play cause once everything is plugged up and conected properly its good to go. No need to modify your headlights housings or anything. The casper sheilds are already on the bulb so it controls the beam. You wont have any crazy cut off problems. At least thats what they say about these kits. They are supposed to be among the best.

The sweet thing about this kit is you can have Bi-Xenon too.

If you want a reliable hid setup just search for oem parts. Find OEM ballast and bulbs off a HID equipped car. Pick up some casper shields, make a custom relay harness, and it'll be similar to a plug and play hid kit. It would cost roughly 250 depending on how good of a deal you get.

I just have to say...post pics when complete. HIDs look so nice if you have the right ones with the fog lights. If you put HIDs in then you have to do something to the fog lights to. Good luck with the mods.

Good deal but pointless. Our low beams shut off the moment our highs come on, even without locking them. That will kill the low beam ballasts very quickly if you flash them like we do halogen beams, and it'll kill the highs even quicker.

They're real HIDs so I don't know what you mean by that... I don't have a retrofit, but I'm planning on it as soon as I can find the projectors I want for cheaper than where they're priced now. $600+ is not what I want to pay right now... I don't use Casper shields but as desired_speeds will attest to, I have a pretty nice cutoff. There is a VERY small metal plate adhered to the HID bulb itself and it is basically a small shield. I also know how to aim HID kits properly, hehe, .

^ Holy crap, that's exactly where I mounted one of the ballasts, hehe. On my buddy's car, I riveted the ballasts to the frame and nothing is visible when you look into the engine bay.

i had to take the front bumper off to find a good spot for my ballasts. The engine bay is so tight, it was hard to do it without removing the bumper. Anyways, they're both located somewhere under the headlight.

I found out you gotta hook up a diode (spelling?) That keeps the light burning when you hit your high beams. They work best for when you have the bi-xenon's. When you pull the the switch, it keeps both on so that the actuator and swing up. I don't now if that makes any sense. You and I were talking about this in another thread. It all made sense when my projectors came. Hey, did you ever do your retrofit? What kind of relay harnest did you come up with for your ballasts? Any pictures? I"m doing mine soon and the wiring is freaking me out a bit

^ I never did the retro because of cost concerns, and also not being able to find a good condition set of projectors.

I'm considering those relays now to keep the lows on with the highs, but I actually need to be able to switch into halogen mode in SF because I've been pulled over several times already.

~Cheers~
