look im my other thread (pics for neo ) i have the 6000k hid kit and it is basically plug in, i have the hids in the headlights and the foglights in the headlights ( thats 2 for each side ) and if you look in my engine there is no signs of ballasts. what i did to install them was remove the front bumper cover and since i have an air filter i have no resonator box i mounted 2 balasts on each side to the frame of the car and also while i was at it i put HELLA air horns in there which is hooked up to the alarm and my regular horn.
i think that it was the best way to do it and i know your thinking that theres water getting in there but ive looked at them recently and there as clean as when i put em in so you dont ahve to worry about anything going wrong with them

I have 4 ballasts mounted behind my bumper and I never had a problem. 2 of those have been there for a long time. (August 2000) Most ballasts can resist a little water.

I had some kind of Philips kit and it gave me trouble. I know someone who sells OEM Mercedes BOSCH HID's for cheap. I'm using BOSCH ballasts and ignitors with Autolites 6000K bulbs.

I'm not sure what happened but one of the ballasts stopped working. When I took the whole kit out and and I tested the ballast by touching the power and ground on the battery it would just spark.

I can get OEM Bosch kits for $250 with 2 ballasts, 2 ignitors, and 2 D2R HID bulbs. I took an H4 bulb and took off the metal plate that goes around the bulb. If you look behind the plate you'll see 3 small weld points holding it on. Once you get that off, slide it over the HID bulb, put it side by side with a regular H4 bulb and align the HID capsule with the H4 filament. Make sure the small wire that runs along the HID bulb meets up with the top tab on that H4 plate. Get some plumbers epoxy and put a little bit behind the H4 plate. Dont put too much because then the bulb wont lock into the headlight right. Now you have an H4 HID bulb. The pattern is pretty good and theyre bright as hell. I used to get flashed alot. They were also VERY blue. Weird how they looked purple in a Benz but blue in my car. I dont have that setup anymore because I switched to 6000K crystal white.

As for as the Hella projectors I custom mounted, they are made to work with D2S bulbs. I couldnt get D2S bulbs in 6000K Crystal White to match my headlights so I got H7 bulbs and modified the base slightly and they work perfect! My headlight pattern is huge.

I'm not sure if they're better or worse. I've never had any problems.

I dont have the factory fogs anymore, I replaced them with Hella projectors. (Mercedes SL class) If you look in my sig pic closely you'll see them. They're on in that pic but its daytime. I responded to your LED post also BTW.
