just keep on the d4.. you should only downshift to 3rd if you need the extra torque(example: passing slower traffic).. keeping it on 4th will save you gas.. driving on 3rd with pump more fuel into your motor and you car will be revving high..

D4 is the 'overdrive' of the transmission in your car. that will save gas, giving better mpg and lower rpm. TLx is right..torque is the only reason to change.

D3 should really only be used when either passing someone on the freeway or to keep it in 3rd gear on twisty roads/mountain passes.

You can also use D3 for engine braking. Very nice when rounding a curve.

D4 is the default forward gear. D3 is for extraordinary circumstances.

No. It will not let you go faster. It gives you more power to pass a truck or slow your car down. Don't leave it in that gear for long on the highway because as mentioned, decrease your gas mileage because the engine revs higher and the fact that the tranny may overheat. So like what people have said here, use it when needed to.

why even bother putting it in d3 for extra power. Why not just increase the throttle, till the tranny downshiftys into d3 by itself. Same effect, i would think. I've also noticed that when i do pop into d3 at highway speeds, there is a noticeable jerk in the tranny.

D1 - Car won't go out of first gear
D2 - Car won't go out of second gear
D3 - Car won't go out of third gear
D4 - Car is in highest gear

Each gear will only be able to get you to a certain speed. First will bring you to ~40 I believe, second I am unsure, third to ~110, and fourth ~150 (I am guessing on fourth, never been that fast, but I believe the car is electronically limited at like 154).

If you have ever rode a bike with gears, or even without, did you ever get going so fast that you pedalled with no resistance? Then you shift up, so that you can go faster?

It takes more energy to go faster in a lower gear, again on a bike, going 20mph in 7th gear is a lot more consuming then going 20mph in 21st gear. It has to do with the actual ratio of teeth on each gear, with each spin of your legs/engine giving a certain amount of rotation to the wheels through the gear.

If you are driving in D4, and in fourth gear, and drop it to D3 the jerk you feel is the downshift, and the engine speed. If you don't change the pressure on the gas pedal, you will begin to slow down, because you are not delivering enough power to hold the speed you were at.

You can go try this out, drive up to 50mph in D4, and note the RPM of the engine. Then shift into D3, and note that you begin to slow down. This is the engine braking that someone spoke of. Basically you slow down without hitting the brakes. Give the car some gas (you will need to give it quite a bit) to get back up to 50mph, now note the RPM again. The RPMs should be about twice as high in D3, because it requires more energy to move the car with the lower gear ratio.

You don't have to put it into D3 to gain extra power to pass, like you said, it will downshift itself. Either way works, though some people are more comfortable with one way then the other.

You should always cruise in D4 though, it is much more efficiant, giving you better gas milage, and safer on your tranny/engine (keeps the heat down).

Some people do that on the highway is because shifting it yourself is more instantaneous than pushing the gas pedal, wait for a second of two for the computer to recognize "oh crap...I need to shift gears" then shift. Sometimes that way may be too late.

Also shifting the gear yourself is great if you're trying to slow down. Manually shifting to a lower gear will help you to slow down via the engine instead of brakes. When use together, your car can slow quicker than just slamming on the brakes. Also works well when you're driving down a mountain.

I use D3 it makes the car jump faster at stops. D4 is a little too slow for my likings.

Both D3 and D4 start on the first gear. If you want to "jump faster", you should drop it all to way down to D1 and shift it manually at a much higher engine speed.

true, but what i think hes trying to say is that when u pop it in d3, upshifts are delayed.

Not true. The programming is the same in regardless. The only difference is that the tranny will never shift into the 4th gear when the gear shift is at D3.

Yeah. We have 2 Accords ('90 EX with 220k miles and a '98 EX-VL with 70k) and both perform the exact same. The programming is the same for both D3 and D4 positions.

Haha...we're a Honda family. We have those two Accords, my TL, Honda lawn mower and a generator.

Your cb7 has 220k miles with stock motor and tranny? auto or manual? My family is a toyota family....with the exception of my tl and accord(93 EX coupe).

In my opinion, TL's tranny is too eager to save gas. If you step on it just hard enough to maintain a constant acceleration, it'll shift you at 2,000 rpms. Enough to get you to 40 mph in 10+ seconds.

Also, the tranny puts you in overdrive by 30 mph. Maybe all automatics are like this (never had another one before). I just think it is strange that 2nd and 3rd are pretty much non-existent in our cars.

Yup!! Almost everything is stock. It's an automatic. The problem with it now is that power steering fluid is leaking but we couldn't find the source and the cruise control died.
