chroming shift plate

sorry to bring up an old issue, but im having difficulting taking off shift plate. Don't feel too comfortable about "prying" it off with a knife. Do you think that I could just take the black plastic surround out, spray graffiti remover/paint thinner onto a rag and then rub the plate vigorously to get to chrome. Would really appreciate some input on this. Thanks.

Yes, you can do that. Just put it on a corner of the cloth and be careful

Just cover around the area very well either with a cloth or a few layers of newspaper and masking tape. I popped mine out when I had the center console out so it was a lot easier to take off than prying it out with the center console in place. If you go that route, then you may find it a lot easier to pry the plate from the passenger side than the driver's side. Be firm, yet gentle when prying it off, even though that piece of plastic is pretty strong. Good luck!!!

i don't understand how u can't get it off after you have removed the black trim already... once that is off it is basically cheese to get off the shift plate... i wouldn't go the route of removing it while still in place... u will need to rinse it off with water after everything is off and buff it.. i picture it to be really messy when it is still installed... and u could miss parts in the corners and grooves...

ZipStrip...its a paint stripper. Works like a charm. Can find it at your local hardware store.

Good luck with that though, the only reason I say that is because it took a while for the paint to strip off the shift plate when it was sitting in remover. I know your pain though, mine was pretty difficult to removed from its original spot too, i had to pry at it with a knife for a while before I got it to go.

Bingo! I'm going to get that instead of trying to strip the paint off mine again.

Actually, I tried with paint thinner, let it soak for 10 mins, no go, then tried it for 1 hour, still didn't work...oh well. Thanks for the info Ken1997TL!

i feel rude for my previous post Ken i meant no harm. i was just stating the price for anyone who wanted it

but i would like to know how to do it without breaking anything or tearing something apart unecessarily if you wouldn't mind posting your how-to. i'd be grateful for when i do mine (which let us hope is sooner than later)
