Cash for Clunker/AC problem

I have two questions here:

A) I have a 5 banger, does my car qualify?

2) My engine has made a loud screeching sound, NONSTOP until I shut her down, for several years. My A/C has been cold when this "funny" sound was around. The other day, I was driving home from work with the A/C on. I was cold so i turned it off. 3 min later, i turned it back on to find that it blows hot air AND that funny sound in the engine is gone!!!!! So now my engine is quiet but I don't have cold air. My temp gauge is fine....? What could be the problem and how much does it cost? I am at 135k and had a major tune up at 60k (wayyy too early, I know). Is it time for another tune up and have the A/C repaired somehow or should i trade it in or do the cash for clunker, if i qualify?

Cash for clunkers program ended yesterday. Dunno about that screeching though. And your car didn't qualify. My 3.2 got too good of gas mileage, so your 2.5 must've been way over.

+1 that sound was the compressor dieing a slow death.

Make sure you clean all of the metal out of the system before you run a new one.

I literally just fixed the same problem 3 minutes ago. In the garage with my buddy's Legend and the AC tensioner pulley seized. Check that and check to see if the belt hasn't snapped.

~Cheers~

I had a feeling a belt snapped somewhere.. FAWK!! I haven't even looked under the hood since it happened a few days ago so I hope its not a snapped belt or a broken pulley.

I'm kinda glad it did end. Those video's of the dealerships destroying the engines, as they must do when a car is turned in, made me so sad.

I was curious and checked to see if our cars qualify for that program through their website and it showed that we get an average of 20mpg city/hwy combined. So no we do not qualify, needs to be 18mpg or lower.

I had that same sound with my car for about a year and fixed it several months ago. It was my compressor bearing that was bad. I ordered a used compressor with a new set of bearing pressed in online, took the pulley out from that compressor and put it onto my compressor and noise is gone.

yeah its like deblooding a dog or something. they dedrain the oil then the put in some chemical into the engine. they then stomp on your gas pedal until white smoke is seen and the engine slowly dies..

yea. poor mpg or not, I don't see how anyone, especially anyone from this first gen forum with our one-of-a-kind cars, could give their car up to that fate.

I'd hope it was a belt or pulley and not the compressor itself!!

I have been asked several times if I'd do it, and I always had a two part answer:

I get 30+MPG highway, 20-30 city.
It's worth more than they're offering.

Yeah, and Corvette's LS7 can get 27MPG highway. When I go down to SoCal I get over 30 going there, but factor in city driving and traffic, I got between 20 and 25.

When you drive in Super Gas Saver DX mode like Jason and I do sometimes, you get good mileage. No going over 2K RPM if you can, and definitely no going over 3000.

Update:

Okay so I just popped the hood and looked at the belts. Seems like a belt is missing LOL! The pulleys have black clumps of gunk on the treads. Anyway, so is it as easy as just replacing a missing belt and keeping the pulley or what? How much am I looking at here? I don't plan on doing this project myself. I am going to bring it to this small moms and pops place I usually go to for things like this.

The pulley seized and the belt melted, then snapped from the friction. That's the cause of the squealing. Change the tensioner, belt, and you should be ok, but check to see that the compressor itself wasn't the part that seized.

no wonder! I was wondering where that squealing came from. I looked under the hood and didn't know where but had an idea it was from the pulley/belt area.

oh well, ill have to get it fixed sometime soon. thanks gogogo

NP. Remember to give me dibs if you're going to get rid of the car. If you're thinking of donating it, I'll fly out there and drive it back, no joke.

go: How much did you pay for that ac pulley? I went to autozone and they said they would have to order it if i was interested and they quoted me 163 bucks. Is this right?? I was thinking a pulley would be less than 50 bucks or so..?! He also told me that its not called "ac pulley" but instead "ac clutch" is this right???

by the way, what the mechanic told me was the pulley thats closest to the ground is stuck and will not rotate. b/c of this the belt does not turn, therefore melts the belt and that is why i see black gunk on the top pulley (just as you have mentioned).

The "a/c pulley" or "a/c clutch" was what I replaced on mines months ago. Seems like you are having problem with the small pulley instead. Tell them you want the idle pulley.

If the lower one isn't turning, then it's the clutch bearing that's out. The upper one is the tensioner pulley. If you can get under there, try turning it by hand, or if you trust your mechanic, go with his suggestion. The bearing should be under $100, and it needs to be pressed into the clutch.

~Cheers~

Is this it? It shows the application is for 6 cyl 3.2 but I have a 2.5 for 135 bucks. I was wondering if it matters.
