Exclamation Car was stolen...

As I stated in the title, my car was stolen last night outside of my house. San Francisco Bay Area members, please be on the lookout for a champagne 96 3.2. The most noticeable features are as follows:

Very shiny gold-coloured card in the lower left hand corner of the windshield
Clear bumper lights
Hyper-blinkers (left-turn, right-turn, AND hazards)
Single oval exhaust
It has a nice burble that can get loud if the throttle is punched. The exhaust isn't as loud as the intake, which is VERY noticable at the TB changeover at 3900RPMs.

License plate number is 5BYF135. Please help me out guys, if there is a sighting, please phone +14158672759 and ask for Arthur. Please wait for me to answer as the girl talking is NOT my voicemail.

Thanks m8s...

~Cheers~

We are planning to. I'm not as worried about the car as I am what was inside. I just lost about $7000 worth of phones/equipment... And now I owe one of my friends $2000...

Thanks for the support you guys... My car was stolen once before, before I owned it. The fucker actually left 3 laptops, 200 CDs, and 7 phones inside... but took the spare tyre. He also gave the car a tune-up, hehe. Lets hope that these guys take my jumper pack, but leaves all my other stuff in the car...

hey man, sorry to hear.... I lived in the city last summer.. came outside one day and my car was gone.... I think I just sat on the curb in a daze for a while.. then I saw someone getting towed and it figures, yea it just got towed, which is a little better than stolen but same difference.. the city impound is like the freaking mafia man.. they basically take your car and won't give it back until you pay them $110 cash, no matter what.

anyway, I always worry about this, especially since we have frameless windows.. the glass is stronger than you'd think and will bend A LOT, so shove a wedge in there at the top and pull up on the door open switch with a hanger.. almost too easy.... I did this once when I locked my keys inside, and considering it was my car and I didnt really want to break anything, I went easy on the window.. I can just imagine someone who didnt care if they broke it or not.

did you have an alarm? or just the factory alarm? this is why I don't like car alarms.... unless you have the kind that pages you when your alarm goes off, it's useless.. they go off so much that no one even pays attention anymore.... even if you do have an alarm, visual deterrents are necessary, like the CLUB.. I gotta get one.... I do have etched glass though, which is another good deterrent.

reminds me to get started on one of my summer projects.... hidden kill-switch

In light of this unfortunate even, Id like to bring out a discussion of whether or not if its possible to rig up an alarm/theft deterent system that will be impossible for thefts to steal unless it being towed away. Or atleast making the thiefs work longer and more riskier? Any creative ideas anyone? I think I will implement some of these ideas for my G35.

The factory alarm on the TL (our generation at least) is rather useless because it lacks an immobolizer.

To steal one, you would either break or pry a window to unlock a door. Then you pop the hood and cut the horn wires. Use a crowbar or similar to smash the key area and then turn the tumbler with a screwdriver. The whole process would take less than a minute. Clubs and other similar devices are useless too. It takes about 5 seconds to cut a steering wheel and toss the thing away.

The car alarms that work are the ones that notify you when something happens so you can go check on it.

Also, immobolizer devices that require a chip to start are also pretty good. They are so good that thieves would rather carjack a car than figure out how to get past it. (regular run of the mill theives at least)

Finally, rivet a LoJack or GPS tracker to your frame so you still have a good recovery if all else fails.

Our stock alarms are useless. My keys got locked in my car (wont say who did it) and I was fortunately at a gas station.. i got it open with their slimjim in less than a few minutes with no glass scratches.

1. Get a visual deterrent, like the Club. It's not really going to stop someone from stealing the car, but it make them think twice (for a second or two).

2. Hidden kill-switch. It should be well concealed or camoflauged as a different button (like the window lock button.... when do I ever lock my windows? I could just disconnect it and make it the kill-switch. Thieves will quickly check under the dash, etc., but how many are going to think about unlocking the windows when they're looking for the kill-switch? Where ever you put it, it should be within reach from the drivers sitting position. If you have a really nice car (like a G35.... or a 1G TL), the thief will probably eye you up before he tries to steal your prize. If he sees you making some awkward motion every time you get into your car, he'll know right where to look.

3. Alarm with pager and backup battery. The thief could disconnect the main battery to try to silence the alarm but it will still sound. Meanwhile, you're already on your way downstairs with your Keltec P11 (smaller/lighter than the Glock.. I love this thing).

4. Hood lock/cable. This will prevent them access to the battery, etc.

5. A couple Piezo "pain generator" sirens mounted inside car. These are cheap, like 15 bucks, and a few of them will make it VERY uncomfortable for the theif to remain in the car while the alarm is going off. One or two under the hood wouldn't hurt either (just in case).

6. To make it harder to tow, park front-in if you have front-wheel drive or back-in if you have rear-wheel drive. Turn your wheels completely to one side. If parking on the street, turn wheels toward curb. Of course, none of this really matters, because I have seen tow trucks drag a car out and then hook it up, or if they want to be nice, slip little dollies underneath the wheels and roll it out. Can't really do anything about that.

7. If you want to spend the $$, get a recovery system like Lojack.

That's all I got.

I would waste time or money with a Club.

I know from experience it would just send a "challenge" to thieves. Even if they couldn't steal the car because of other reasons, you've still got a broken window.

The kill switch is a good idea. So is a hood lock.

LoJack was good in the 90's. These days you can go with GPS/satellite systems with nationwide coverage.

Most anything we have will just prevent opportunistic thieves. If somebody is tracking/stalking you, its a different story.

My friend's relatively new Prelude was stolen out of his driveway. Somebody broke into his house and stole his keys (and his PS2 back when they were new).

My doors keep locking every half second and it's noticably loud from the outside. A theif wouldn't come close.

Thanks for the support guys... I'm just so depressed right now. I can't really go to work that easily anymore... Last time I couldn't drive, it took me 2 hours by tube to go to work, and cost me about $20 per day... God damn this feeling of helplessness!!!

-Your best bet is to wire your alarm awkwardly. Don't wire it up like how most alarm installers run them.

-have a hidden kill switch and a remote pager, as everyone else stated

gogogo: hopefully you will get your car back but if you do, they prob just took the valuables and not strip the car...unless they were super duper poor and wanted to resell back stock parts? i dont mean to make you feel any worse but i have a cousin who also has a 96 TL, they took his car and stripped the $4000+ in audio equipment then burnt it. Good luck and good luck with your current budget in transportation.

Sorry for your loss, I know how you feel had my civic si stolen.
I had amlost everything you can imagine to stop them.
1. alarm
2. cut off switch
3. club and auto lock (lock u put on the brake but i had it on clutch since si is stick)
4. multi locK (lock the shifter)
5. 24 hours security in area (what a joke)

I honestly think the security had something to do with it.
Only way is to tow and if u don't notice a tow truck, your not doing your job.

Thanks again guys. Ima ganbatteiru-yo. If I wasn't trying to stay calm, I'd go hunting. I'm trying to let the 5-0 do their job... So far it's been pretty good. I called non-emergency, and immediately got an answer. Talked to the operator and she said she would despatch a squad car over to my house. I went back inside to change and when I stepped out, the cop was there already (less than 5 minutes). I just hope that I can afford to pay back my friend's for their phones that I was supposed to deliver this morning... Shittiest part is that I'm almost flat-broke since a week and-a-half ago, I bought a house. Now I've got a mortgage to pay, another one that I'm helping out with, utilities for my house, another auto loan, and insurance for my three cars. I can't afford another car right now... @Desired, thanks for keeping an eye out, m8. I've talked to some of my friends and they've reached a general consensus that my car would still be in Daly City. I personally think so, too, but you never know.

~Cheers~

My car has been recovered!!! SFPD called me @ 0327 of all times, and I missed it. I checked with DCPD this morning and from what SFPD said to DCPD, all that was taken from the car was the el-cheapo JVC deck!! I'm crossing my fingers that that really was all. Thanks for all the help, m8s!!

Dude after reading this, I was seriously praying for you. I hate when shit like this happens to a working brother. Let's all hope that only the deck was taken and nothing else, so that you can hook ur friend up with the phones you promised him. Definetely get a nice alarm installed - something with a Tilt sensor (to alert you when it's getting towed), those pain inducing piezo sirens, and a nice hidden kill switch.

My mechanic was gonna install one for me, but we've never really gotten the time to -I'll definetely move this up my agenda. He said he was gonna wire it to the fuel relay. He said the car would run for like 5 seconds if started and then would die. Fine by me.

When I took my accord to FL for Spring Break a year ago, I had to park it in this lot for one week - I pulled out the spark plug wires and took them with me! Thing is, 3.2's don't have plug wires!

Also, a lot of people had some great suggestions for safeguarding our cars but I think it would be more beneficial it we actually posted pics of some good products. Most of these paging alarms I see are generic brand with somewhat "ghey" remotes that look childish. Anyone know of a nice alarm system with a cool remote that we could all look into. Maybe a group buy

What I did for my 97 civic when bought it brand new was wire a switch in series with my fuel pump. whenever i'd get into my car it'd be on. I thought the switch might fail sometime down the road so i wired it in a place that was hidden but fairly easy to get to (in the even I would have the pull the switch and just twist the power wires together. Well I tested it with the switch off.. and the car would just stall everytime I tried to start it without it on. Don't know if I should do it with my 3g TL though.

Sorry for keeping everyone waiting... I went to pick it up this morning and found it empty... only two phones were left because one was in pieces for repair and one fell into the slot between the seat and the passenger door. I'm typing this on a phone so I will keep it short. I'll post up more when I get on a computer... Let's put it this way though, we think it's someone who knows me...
