Cam Sensor Assembly
Cam Sensor Assembly
I currently have 138K miles on my '98 2.5TL. I had got the timing belt replaced at 105K miles. I bought everything from the dealership except the water pump and the tensioner. As luck would have it, the water pump developed a leak a few months back.
So, now that the winter is about to start, I'm planning to have the water pump replaced. I thought I might as well replace the thermostat, timing belt and the radiator hoses along with it. The guy who works on my car said that he noticed the last time that the housing for the Cam Sensor was melting and that it may be a good idea to replace it. He said that if the sensor assembly fails, I could get stranded at any point.
I've no idea about the Cam Sensor. I did notice that it's very expensive - 250 + shipping.

Has anybody ever replaced this? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi there,
My cam sensor melted too. It was a black tar or silicone rubber that dripped from the sensor and made its way down to bottom of the engine bay. My mechanic said to replace it. Called the Acura dealer and they said they have been having some problems with 1st G sensors but did not replace it.
The cam sensor was $180 for the part, he installed it for free cause I was getting the timing belt done. Ouch.
So far so good. Yeah, get it replaced.

Hey dl2000, thanks for the info. Since I hadn't heard of anyone else replacing their cam sensor on this forum, I was wondering what the deal was with my sensor. Now, I feel reassured knowing that some dealership acknowledged that they've had issues with 1st Gen sensors. You got a sweet deal if it cost you $180. I ordered it yesterday for $254 + shipping. I ordered the timing belt, thermostat and a few other gaskets and ended up spending $343 on that order
01 TL, I bought it for $55
I am not sure if you already took car of it or not, but I just had a problem with starting the car. Check engine light came on and after a few code reading it showed cam sensor once and crank shaft sensor twice.
So, I bought them both and replaced them. My car is an 01 TL and the dealer price for the cam sensor was $90, my mechanic bought it for $55 since he has an account with them.
Or may be we are not talking about the same part!!

We may be talking about the same part here. I've noticed that there is a significant price difference on parts between the first and second generation TLs. For example the intake manifold for a 2001 TL costs $176 wheres that for a 1998 3.2TL costs $654.00.
I bought the cam sensor from Delray Acura for $254 + shipping. I still have to have it installed though.
