Bringing Nevada car into CA, is it 50 state?

My 20 year old son is presently driving back from Vegas with a 1996 2.5 TL which we will have to get smogged before we can register it here. Does anyone know if this model/year is a 50 state car? Or a 49 state? if it is a 49 state does anyone have knowledge about getting it to pass ca emissions?

We just bought it from a lady my boss knows who was buying a brand new BMW 750IL and was only offered $1000 for it by the dealer, so she let us have it for that! Pretty happy, the car is very clean, runs great with about 125,000 miles on it.

Thanks Bob Graham

(This will be my son's login, I created it for him in anticipation of his needing your help )

We don't have emissions tests here in RI. I'm sure the Cali people or some others that have experienced emissions tests will chime in on this.

Our cars also have extended emission warranty. If you have emission problems, call the dealer and check to see if you qualify to get it fixed free under warranty. I think it is 14 years/150,000 miles.

^ But if the emission components fail again, you can bring it back to them before warranty expires. This excludes the one time free tune up they perform.

Thanks for the replies, we got it here and the underhood sticker indeed says it is California Smog legal.

Now to figure out why it's overheating!

Coolant needs to be flushed, our engines run a little hot. Also the thermostats go out after a while, they're cheap and easy to replace. Best of luck!
