1st Gen Folks

Are the 1st gens supposed to beep when you lock unlock the car with the key fob. I have to constantly walk back to and check to see if the car really locked up (specially in a noisy place where I can't hear the locks slam shut). A confirmatory beep from the car would be really nice and reasuring.

Is this a feature on 1st gens (I have a 97 3.2) that is not working for me or was it never there at all?
Assuming it is not a feature that is not working for me - is it an easy DIY?

Anybody tackle this before?
