aftermarket subs in 1st gen

Do you guys have a sealed or ported box? For those with ported, do you have the kind of box where the ports face upward? do you have the ports facing the ski slot opening (Do you open the ski slot to have the bass freq travel into the cabin of the car?).

What about those with a sealed box? Which way are you firing your subs? I read that having the subs firing at the rear of the car (label of the subs facing the trunk lid) is the best to get loud bass. I hate it how our seats don't fold down. My next car will be gas efficient and either have fold down back seats or ill get a suv/truck/hatchback.

From what I have heard, the TLs and Legends and other Acuras and such can afford to have a ported box. My buddies legend has one 12 in a ported box and when he turns it up it gets really loud... never hear one bit of rattling on the inside.

im sure there is rattling in all cars. Prob less/more on certain cars but still, you know?

kam: you ever thought about taking out your 6x9s and have the ports shoot up through the grills? 6X9s aren't necessary if you have aftermarket components. I'm not saying 6x9s aren't useful b/c they are if you have people sitting in the backseat but other than that, you really don't need them. I'm taking mines out as soon as I get some components.

I've seen that done before..not a bad idea. The deck on top is just thin wood with carpet on top. Underneath is some thin metal, so it's not too hard to do the port but it is irreversible unless you get a new top deck.

why do you want to fire the ports into the cabin?

bass frequencies aren't directional. I don't even think it'll make that much of a difference in sound volume.

so if I had a porsche I could put a box under the hood, since the engine is in the back, and it would still sound the same?

I have a 12 inch diamond in a sealed box..... facing it towards the rear of the car. Sounds good the way it is.... if anything I will be building a beauty panel jus to make it look a little cleaner.

It shouldn't matter which way the subs face, unlike some of the higher speakers like tweeters.

i just have 1 3512 and am using an old school rockford 800a2 for now. I am sticking with old school amps (rockford, ppi, etc.) b/c those were the solid amp days. Currently I am eye'ing on a rockford 1000bd.

2 3512 is too much bass for me! 1 is plenty and that is already making my trunk rattle. It rattles big time and I fucking hate it. However if i had a suv or some hatchback, I'd go with 2 3512. I have a truck but i didn't get the extended cab so no room for a sub. I do have some ID components pushed by a MTX amp in the truck.

Here are some pictures I took of the sub when I first got it.

its an okay size. It weighs about 30-35 lbs. or so.

peak power handling of 3200 watts, 1600 power handling music, and 1000 watt rms. I love DDs b/c not too many people have heard of it. You mostly see it in car audio competitions and not too many dealers are distributors of the sub. More people have heard of RE (resonant engineering) which is just as great as DD.

What kind of negative remarks are made about DDs?? Too much SPL? I don't see anything remotely wrong with them. Also, where in the world are you finding 3512 for 500 bucks?

right now it is sitting in my jl 12w6 enclosure. The box I am going to get is a custom built one tuned for the DD. The guy quoted me 200 bucks just for the box. I could use that 200 for the amp so the box can wait.

Old School amps really are no joke. Have any of you heard of ZAPCO AG 1000?
Well, believe it or not, I was sponsored by ZAPCO a while back, before the AG series went into production. I got the 2 proto-type AG 1000's and it was a tweaked out prototype. Pure, I mean pure 1200W each! The only thing was I couldn't run it 2 ohms or less...only 4ohms (ZAPCO told me). Back then ( about 8 years ago), I hit 156db at a sound-off. I had 8, 12 inch kicker comps in a wall, right behind my front seats of my '89 Honda Civic SiR Hatchback. Later I blew ALL my subs at once! I still have and use the amps....only 2 in the world. I'm gonna keep em forever

Yeah I've heard of Zapco. Anybody who is really into audio should have heard of zapco. pure 1200w is great, especially when you had it 8 yrs ago. 156db is insane but with 8 12" isn't much today. it was back then though! 8 12" today can well do over 156db. Want to sell your zapco?!

Haha....by the way, the shop that did my audio, built a competition Austin Mini Cooper(the older ones). They installed 24 PPI flat 12 inch subs, and made a trailer for it which had 24 ORION amps, and 20 Optima batteries. 8 Years ago, that was insane!
