98 2.5 electrical issue - solved

Thought I would pass this along.

Had a burning smell coming through the vents the other day - thought it was the truck in front of me or something on the exhaust. Went away, then it came back, went away, then back again.

Did just over 100 miles and the ABS light came on, clock and dash lights dimmed. Managed to get home and identified the burning smell as coming from the alternator.

Got a new rebuilt alt and installed it. No issues for about 30 miles of driving. Then the ABS light came on, clock dimmed, and the smell came back.

Turned out the alt belt was going as a result of the crank-shaft pulley failing - it was separating. Got a new one of those, had it installed (my tools are still in North Carolina at the reclamation facility as the moving truck caught fire...) and all is good. A pricey item only available from Acura, but Delray Acura gives a good discount.

155,000 miles on the dial...

Chris...now in Tampa FL...

Yeah, there are quite a few people on here reporting about the harmonic balancer separating on the 2.5TLs. I'm pretty sure your original alternator was still going strong at that mileage. I'm at 165k miles and still going on a lot of original parts, lol.

So what happened, you moved from NC to FL and the moving truck caught on fire?

I felt a bit bad changing out the altenator, but it was not that expensive and I did it myself. I do 60 miles return for work each day so cheap insurance.

Moving from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada to Tampa, Florida to work at MacDill AFB for four years the moving truck caught fire in Rocky Mount, NC and was flat-bedded to Charlotte...

The adventure continues.

The moving company has been good so far. We will see when it comes time to deal with the three motorcycles.

Wow that's some luck you're having. Hopefully that remanufacted alternator won't give you any trouble. I've known of some people who changed out a couple of reman while I'm still rocking the original.
