1996 TL 2.5 Wipers

This follows my other posting detailing the timing belt replacement.
I bought it from a neighbor who passed this summer (from the wife).
Without too much digging Id like to know if the wipers are a common problem. I have the Chilton book.
The manual has some information on wipers but not enough on troubleshooting in my opinion.
Is there an access to a plug connector for voltage tests ?
Comments welcome. rp

Thank you. The Chilton book Section 11 has a procedure. Now to find the fuse location.

I briefly looked at google last night...

inside the car, there should be a fuse box in the kick panel...couldnt decipher if it was in the drivers side or passenger side...
but, wiper fuse location for the '96 TL is located in fuse slot #8

Hope it’s only the fuse but the 1st gen TL wiper motor fails prematurely. Long known issue. I’ve changed mine 2x in the past 7 years. Easy replacement. Used or cheap reman makes sense.

The small panel is on the drivers side. The fuse is intact. If it is the motor that is the problem, does it have a connector plug
in the wiring ?

Yes. Under cowl, driver’s side.

In checking presence of voltage at the connector, one pin has standing voltage. When making the connection that voltage would be fed to the motor.
Is that enough to imply that the motor is defective ? Is there another component I should suspect ?

Shouldn’t take more than 45 min, if that. Good luck!

In the process of motor replacement; if the motor is connected electrically, if the switch is operated and turned off, shouldnt the motor
stop in the ''parked'' position ? If that is true what position should the small drive arm point ? Does it make a difference ?

I'm finishing the wipers. The key here is the center mount which holds the pivots for both operating rods. The top is for the center
wiper; on the bottom lies the pivot for the left wiper. A polished metal ball is held in a nylon cup----strong grip pressure will seat it.
Rotation of the wiper motor is clockwise if you view as it is mounted. A short plate is mounted to the motor and that holds the
rod to the center mount. As it rotates it causes the center wiper to oscillate in its arc. This causes the left (drivers) wiper to arc.
A strengthening brace is located between the motor mount and center mount. The bolts are 10mm. The nuts are on the
bottom of the brace and will fall loose. I think it a failing that the nuts are not captive in some manner. Epoxy would be good
to keep them in place.
This experience is particular to this TL, but wiper operation isnt terribly difficult when you know what gets driven and where the
pivots are located. This isnt addressed well in the Chilton book I have. A suggestion----make pictures before work and as you
go along. rp
