what the hell is a shift cable?

The interior shifter on my 98 RL has been stiff. An automatic it is difficult to shift when i start the car in the morning but after a few minutes it seems fine. After a day the check engine light came on - i took it to a mechanic, he checked the code and P1706 (A/T issue) came up - i took it to a "transmission specialist" who said i probably need to replace the shift cable or the sensor or both. He described the shift cable as a wire that connects the shifter to the transmission. Could this just be a problem with low transmission fluid? I'm not as knowledgeable as you guys about cars and i could use some help.

Thanks

Yes there really is a cable that physically connects your shifter to the actual transmission. It has nothing to do with low transmission fluid.

Thank you, any suggestions on how I should repair / replace the shifter cable?
