Violent Intermittent Vibration in 00 RL

Anyone had this problem? When on the highway, steering wheel starts shaking left and right violently, feels like heavy vibration from front end, and I can hear what sounds like driving on a flat tire. Usually happens between 70 and 80 mph but will not go away even when slowing to 60. Shaking and vibration will go away after a few minutes then car rides smooth for rest of the ride. Took the car to an Acura dealer and they only said that there is some play in my axle (common for a car with 105,000 miles) and tires are a bit old but found nothing else. I let them keep it and drive it for 4 days. They could not recreate the vibration. ON THE WAY HOME from the dealer it started again. Don't know why they couldn't recreate it. Should I take it back to the Acura dealer or to a tire place to have the tire balancing checked? Fear of taking it to a tire place is that they will try to sell me new tires when there might be a bigger problem. Any suggestions?

Go to a trustable wheel & tire expert store such as Goodyear, Michelline, etc. and do a four wheel balance. That kind of vibration is always caused by the wheel balance problem.

My 97 also had a similar problem. You might have an inner tie rod going bad. Before I changed the PS rack which also involved the inner and outer tie rods my 97 would get the shakes really bad. Not all the time but when it happened it was terrible. I figured the tie rod was the problem and since I've changed the parts mentioned the shaking has not happened again. A good mechanic will be able to check this for you.
