SRS light

Okay, more shenanigans on my new (to me) 1999 RL. The SRS light is (and has been) on. I went to autozone and they said that they can not read SRS codes (is that right?) and I asked them to do it anyway. The tried to oblige but could not find the connector even with about 90 seconds of searching. What am I looking for? Is there somewhere it can be tucked away?

Also, is there an easy to check if the SRS light is real w/o paying $100 for the dealer to check and reset?

They probably can't read them. Most likely they just have a scanner for the engine.

The SRS connector is under the steering wheel column slightly to the left hand side.

It might be yellow or blue, i forget.

So should I just go to the dealer? Or is there another way to tell if the warning light has no code?

The warning light definitely has a code and yes you'll almost certainly have to go to the dealer.

There MAY be a way to use a paper clip to complete the circuit and get the light to flash in a morse code-like sequence. You'll obviously need a shop manual to know what the lights mean.

I'm going to assume it has to do with the side airbags and the weight/position sensors. They tend to be buggy since they were the first of their kind.

Call the dealer. This is possibly due to the passenger seat sensor going bad. I had this happen to my car once and they reset it and replaced the sensor free of charge (Acura covers it I believe). The dealer said not to keep any electronics on the passenger seat, as it may cause this problem in the future.

You can reset the light on your own using the yellow clip behind the lower dash panel cover. Theres a special procedure thats noted somewhere. I think theres a how to in .

If the dealer does not charge to reset I would definately take it to the dealer though. If the dealer does charge say 100 to diagnose, then I would try resetting it via the how to and see if the light comes back on. If there's a problem with the srs system it will simply turn back on within a day usually if not right away.

I believe it is under the glove box. I used a wire and completed the circuit. The only problem i had was it flashed about 3 or 4 codes, but it ended up being a abs wheel speed sensor. There is a thread on another forum that lists the DTC codes...do a google search and itll pop up.

Can you reset it then and everything is fine? I'm already scheduled for a visit to the dealer, but they would know this sort of thing, right?

Okay, so I scheduled service with the dealer and then found out that the closest dealer does not have a good service rep including some claiming a tenancy to make up additional things that are wrong that other shops don't see.

So, I found DIY instructions. Step 1 is remove the dashboard lower cover. But I think mine might already have been removed. When I look under the driver side there are wires everywhere.

Also, I do not see the wire that is supposed to hang down

Oh, and I think that if I write this thing together there will be blinks (long and short) for the code. Does that sound right? (see the comment dated 03-22-06, 11:59 PM on the latter link above). But I can not find, "the blue service connector under the glove box" to wire together. Do I have to take off the under dash cover there too?

There are 2 connectors wrt to SRS
1. Under the driver side panel to reset the light.
2. Under the glove box panel to read the code.

You could use a paper clip for both.

To get to (1) you could either remove the carpet panel on Driver side and look for the yello connector it. It would be held in a small slip in receptor.

To get to (2), look under the glove box panel for a white kick panel. Reach to the back side (toward firewall) of the panel and slide you hand around to find a plug in receptor. The Blue connector is held in that. You could either pull the entire recptor down (towards carpet) and then remove the Blue connector, or remove the Blue connector by pulling it towards the firewall from the receptor.

You have found the procedure to reset the light. If you do not have the procedure on how to read the code you can go to 1G RL forum on Acura world site. They have a sticky on this topic with all the SRS DTC codes mentioned.

My wife told me that there have been lots of carjackings in our neighborhood recently so I decided not to crawl around in my car for 10 minutes checking this out. The dealer said it was something seat belt related and the repair (and scan/reset) was free.

They even game me a bill for $0.00. I asked if they took credit cards and the guy looked at me like I'd grown a second head.
