possible to change rear view mirror casing?
My rear view mirror suffers from the manufacturing issue described in numerous threads on this site.
The color of my rearview mirror is beige. However, the cost of a new one is about $350.00.
I understand that I can purchase a new OEM mirror for a TL that will fit and work exactly as the original for $75.00. However, it is black.
I was wondering if it was possible to use the new mirror with the old casing. Has anyone tried this?
thanks

I tried and failed miserably. IIRC the casing is glued together (even more so once the LCD fluid leaks out. my car is grey but i got a tan one from a junk yard for about 10 bucks. the tan one came apart pretty easy because the fluid wasn't leaking, but my original grey one just wouldn't open up at all. so i just sprayed the tan one with some grey primer, it looks fine since there's no other trim next to it to look mismatched.
Of course I was just trying to pry it apart. if you wanted to cut the two halves apart and reglue them once you put the electronics for a new mirror in, that would probably be alright.
