General appearance is a concern, but enhanced ding/dent protection, a reduction in touching up nicks in the paint, and waxing are what I'm looking for.
Honestly if you are just looking for "Ding protection" clear vinyl wrap does the trick without making your car look like it was driven through concrete.
Wow. Well, this was an interesting read... Just a suggestion here, they make clear films for this very problem. I have no clue as to how much Line-X would cost for an entire car to even chip in on what's more cost conscious considering your car' age... Interestingly enough, I googled this and Line-Xing an entire car has been done before.
I'm detailing my 2000 RL tomorrow (I do it every six months), and I find it is good therapy. My RL and I bond as one through the process and when I'm done I can step back and actually see the results of my labor. It also allows me to notice things I might ordinarily miss when not paying close attention to my 17 y/o vehicle. You can't find a car this well-built at a reasonable price anymore except as used cars and the first gens are rapidly disappearing (as are OEM and aftermarket parts), so if a little TLC is what's required to keep these great looking boulevard cruisers on the road it's well worth it in my humble opinion.
The only 'damage' on my '98 is found on the plastic bumper covers... I would be happy if I found somebody that could repair & refinish them to match the rest of the car.
pline x rhino liner, whatever yo call it, will only make the RL look like a lump of doo doo. DONT DO IT. If you want to patch up the bumpers, blastic dip them.
I have seen the linex in person, looks like a boy racer was bored out of his mind and messed up his ride.
