The OEM navi has been a headache since we purchased our beloved 2000 RL. I disassembled the trunk box and fixed a connection problem once that bought me 2+ years of good service. Since upgrading the disc, I've had nothing buut headaches. Last week I replaced the whole system with a $250 Garmin NUVI 2797 and it's AWESOME. It looks ABSOLUTELY stock except for the fact that I put the pushbuttons back in in the wrong order. The biggest challenge was getting over the angst about removing the center section containing radio, hvac & navi controls. Once I had the whole thing on the kitchen table it was just a matter of removing screws until I had all three control systems out. Once the navi was out I removed everything from the steel box and set it aside, I made sure I kept the two bezels (the larger one that frames the navi and the smaller one that sits behind it and just kisses the screen.
Once all was out, I reinstalled the outer and inner bezel to the console and hot glued the 2797 in place from behind. Then I cut a wooden block to fill the space between the back of the Garmin and the steel box as I didn't want the glue to be the only thing preventing the Garmin from falling back if someone applied a bit too much pressure on a hot summer day!
