ECU Information Req'd

Alright, I need to know whether or not the 99 was the start of the OBDIIb ECUs in the RL. I've got a buddy who needs a replacement and has a 96, which should be OBDIIa. If anyone has any info, please let me know. If you've got the service manual for 96-04 that'd be even better. The SM that I'm referring to is an 800 page PDF weighing in around 45MB.

Would the OBDIIa harness hook up to the OBDIIb motor, and still be able to run the OBDIIa ECU? Or would it need the complete harness + ECU from the OBDIIb vehicle?

Any insight is appreciated!

~Cheers~

More likely than not, they wouldn't give me any specifics because they don't know. Most service techs are idiots. I've heard one of the differences between the OBDIIa & b was the appearance of an immobiliser feature in OBDIIb. I think that's bollocks as it has nothing to do with emissions or motor safety.

RL sections on forums are notoriously dead (esp. 1G RL), but I thought I'd give it a shot here...

Go, i'll find out tomorrow when I'm at the dealership

It IS my hunch that the two are very compatible and it would run.

Thanks Ken, although I've heard from the Shitvic guys that swapping a 99-00 B16 into a 96-98 requires a conversion harness because of the OBDIIa and b differences...

According to the techs, they are different enough that you'll need a conversion harness. Otherwise, the engines and everything else are the same. Lame huh?
