Not sure what you mean by BT kits, you don't need a kit to get BT phones to work, you simply pair them. There have been many posts on the best BT phones that work with the 1st generation RLs.
I use a Treo which works fine.
You will find many phones that work, the difference is typically the amount of information that is displayed in the info under the steering wheel.

Perhaps I said this wrong. I have a 97 RL - to my knowledge it doesn't have built-in BT, therefore there's nothing to pair any given BT phone with, is there?

You might want to post your question in the 1st gen forum, this is the 2nd gen forum

I moved your thread to the 1G RL board as you will get more fruitful replies there.

I use a Motorola HFM1000 BlueTooth handsfree kit in my wife's Honda Pilot. It offers similar functionality to the built-in BT system in the current gen RL in that you press a button, speak a phone number (or a name assigned to a phone number), then activate the phone by voice.

A mike is attached to the headliner, the user module (a tiny thing) is attached wherever you want within reach, and the sound comes out through your installed speakers, though the kit also supplies an external speaker if your head unit is not compatible.

$299 retail (we paid less) and it cost less than $100 to install.

HTH!
