Smile 1998 RL Courtesy Lights

Hello everyone,

Well, this is my first post to the AcuraZine community and it seems light a very good resource for potentially getting this problem I have fixed.

So the problem is with the courtesy lights.
-The door lights do not come on when a door is open (they are all good, I checked).
-The dome lights do not shut off when the doors are open OR closed.
-The reading lights in the back do not work, and the bulbs are definitely good.

I'm not sure if the courtesy light problem is related to the reading lights, but I'm not sure what else to do.

On the rear lights in the headliner I took a volt meter to the two terminals that go to the dome light and I get 12 Volts, as expected.
But the other two terminals that go to the reading lights, I'm getting 0 Volts.

If anyone could help, that'd be great.

Off - Auto - On

The reading lights are not always powered at the same time the dome lights are powered. I believe the car has to be on.

What did you volt meter tell you about your door lights?

I'm also pretty sure that the headlights have to be on as well. I'm not 100% on that but I remember wondering the same thing myself until I realized it.

Yes the headlights or atleast the Parker's have to be on for your rear rearing lights and also your visor lights to work. There are also 2 or 3 7.5amp fuses in the engine bay that are from the interior lights. I blew a couple installing LEDs. Might wanna check those.

Hello everyone. Thank you for responding.

I pushed the fuse in the engine compartment fuse box for the interior lights in and the reading lights work again.

But I am still having the problem about the dome lights not shutting off or the courtesy lights not working.

pdbailey, my volt meter reads 0 volts on the door lights.

Anyone ever had this problem before?
I'm thinking that its one of the sensors on the doors, but the thing is, the picture of the RL on the instrument panel (the one that lights up red if a door or trunk is open) works perfectly.
It'll light up when a door is open and turn off when a door is closed.
Just the dome lights wont shut off, so the car recognizes that the doors are closed, it just wont turn off the dome lights...
I also checked my engine bay fuses again.

You might need to take the car to your local Acura or Honda dealer. We as members can only guess which will only keep you fishing for the issue and once you find it, it may not even be repaired by you.

Anyone else ever had this problem?

And even more helpful what did you do to resolve it?

I did some more investigating on the internet and found that it either could be corrosion on a couple wire connectors in each door or a leak into the multiplex units.

So, I checked just one of the connectors and it looked fine. I also believe that the connectors go to the grabber mechanism that keeps the door shut. And since the picture of my car on my instrument panel works properly, I do not believe that it could be those wire connectors.

As far as leaks go, I haven't checked. I was going to replace the multiplex unit myself (because I have an extra one that I know for sure works in my crashed car), but am not sure exactly where it is.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to run by Acura to see if they know what is up. I just want to avoid dealer costs.
