I recently purchased this car and first noticed it wouldn't always turn on. This was last week. Today, when I shut the car off the key would not go into the off position and release. I tried to start it, but it wouldn't start. I also tried to shift it to neutral, but it won't go into neutral since it's locked in park. I noticed, when in position II that the D light is on and not the red P for park. Could the car think it's not in park, but in drive?

The only way I could get the key out was to disconnect the battery and I could release the key. I also tried to disconnect the alarm switch, but this didn't do anything.

I waited over an hour, but the results were still the same. Days previous to this sometimes I would go to start it and sometimes it would start without an issue and others it would only start from neutral.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

 

I was able to start it by sticking the key into the slot next to the shifter then shifting to neutral. Looks like I will need to go to a dealership this week to have this completely resolved.

 

Sounds like the shift interlock isn't working. This is a sensor connected to the brake pedal that makes sure your foot is on the brake when engaging/disengaging park.

 

I had the same problem w my 97 RL. There's a locking mec on the shifter. Sometimes if you don't shift properly in Park, the lock doesn't set correctly. Jiggle and press down the shifter in Park, you should hear a clicking sound when locked in.

 

Thank all. I've confirmed that it's connected to the shifter/brakes. I've no where near the same issues as before.

 

Good day all, I just took delivery of a 2004 RL with Nav. After 45 days on sea. When the car was delivered I noticed the stick was on N and it can't be shifted to P, R or D1. It shifts from N and drives on D4, D3 & D2. Can anyone please help me out on what to do to get it to P and R. Has the transmission gone bad? Thanks.

The right of your shifter is a slot where you insert a key or something of similar size, it will allow you to move the shifter. Basically the sensor that connects to the brake pedal could be out. ALL cars today require that your foot be on the brake when shifting from P to R to D etc.

 

Thank you, I have tried the shift unlock with the key and I still couldnt shift to P or R from N.

 

Try pushing the shifter knob down and wiggle it around while doing so. Otherwise I'm stumped.

does anybody have a link for removing center console / replacing shift lock solenoid? stuck in park.. fuses good, brake lights work, horn works, manual key hole plunger worked 4 times, now it does not release shifter....
