Weird knocking noise???

Hey guys,
did anyone notice some sort of knocking noise when you start driving after car been parked for a while (overnight)? Every morning I back up from parking space - no noise, then once put on D gear and start driving forward in a couple seconds some weird knocking noise - only once, not loud, comes from engine bay or underneath the car (can't really tell).... Hopefully its just "new car" paranoia, but still....

hmm its happening since 11 miles..... i'm getting worried.... what sucks is that its not reapearing once u start driving.... like if i try ro put it on park or reverse and then back to D - nothing..... only if it has been parked for a while.... so even if i take it to dealer i won't be able to reproduce that sound unless i leave my car there for some time...

I have the same thing and the dealer said that it is the anti-lock braking system performing a check. It only happens when the car has been off for a while. Perfectly normal.

2400 miles and no knocking noise in my RDX. Maybe it's the quality of the fuel you use in Russia Koreets.RU

I've had RDX for 4500 miles and haven't heard a noise like that. If it's truly the brakes doing a check, then I've got a problem because mine aren't doing it.

Mine does it too - exactly as described. However, it is easy to miss. It only happens for me in the morning, usually as I'm rounding the slight bend about 50 feet from my driveway. It's not overly loud, so if there is a lot of ambient noise, or I have the stereo on, I can miss it. I have also noticed a louder knock when I go from drive to reverse, and then back to drive again. It's not 100% consistent, but I've written it off to the AWD system. It sounds similar to the sound my F150 made when I switched to 4WD and the hubs locked.

Like with everything else, taking it to the dealer to have it checked would be fruitless. If it's intermittent, they will never find it and I'd only drive myself crazy worrying about it. My theory is that I still have a ton of miles left on my warranty for it to become more of a problem...

Mike

I posted that I had this problem as well and they didn't hear it when I took it in for service a couple weeks ago. They said if the sound persists I can leave it over night and then come in first thing the next morning to test it out with them. I decided to do it and install the auto-dimming mirror at the same time.

I'll post back if they tell me the same reason as above or something else.

Have you had a chance to take it to the service dept yet?

The rental i have does this as well. It has nearly 4k miles on it.

It does also spark knock a good bit, under partial throttle conditions. It has had 93 in it a few times since ive had it to try to alleviate the knocking. No such luck yet. I will let them know when i take it in. For now, ill just take it easy.

Guys, yeah, I can confirm it IS the anti-lock braking system re-engaging itself. My '03 Element did the same exact thing and this was discussed extensively on those boards as well and confirmed by dealers. Nothing to worry about. I had the noise every so often for the three years I owned the E, never a problem with anything. I've noticed my RDX does the same every now and then. Perfectly normal. Although definitely a bit unsettling to the uninitiated!

I heard it yesterday. Not very loud. Glad it's nothing to worry about.

Sorry, I forgot about this. They didn't tell me it was the anti-locking break (i think my dealership is clueless) but they did say new RDXs on the lot were making the same noise. I'm assuming it's nothing/anti-lock break system.

i have 17k on my 07 and just started hearing a noise when I shift from park to drive or even when I begin to drive from a stop. It is not a motor noise but more like something coming from the trans. I don't feel a performance issue but i am a bit concerned.

^ Does it only happen once during a drive? If so it could be the ABS.

Talking I found it!!!!

The heat aluminum shield that covers the cat converter is was chattering against the converter. I pulled it back a little and it stopped. The thing seems very loose. I will have it checked next time I get an oil change. I can't tell if there is a bolt missing or if it is a bad mount.

interesting i had this same fixed by the dealer yesterday. they did the exact same thing you did..by bending back the heat shield a little bit. the sound i experienced wasn't just one knock like some ppl were reporting, so i thought it was different. mine lasted for a little while after turning right...but goes away after a little bit. anyway, it's all fixed and the engine sounds smooth again!!!

i wonder if this is a design issue with the heat shield.

you can try to see if it happens the same in your car. find a parking lot and crank the wheel right and then step on the gas a bit. in my test drive with the service tech, he could reproduce it this way all the time.

Only noise I have (minor at that) is when shifting from Rev to drive and just boiling that down to the dif engaging. Nothing to be concerned about.
The heat shield thing is very common in any vehicle that has one. Mine's Ok but
I'll have a closer look when changing the oil next time...

Cheers... Tom
